Subject: PR yes but no SIN returning after two and half yrs
  Hi,
I landed in June 2005 and left immediately due to unavoidable family issues. Since then I could not manage to return to Canada. I have already received my PR card. I did apply for SIN card too but did not receive due to some error in application form. Fortunately now I have sorted out all the issues and I am now seriously planning to return to Canada soon, please advise if I will have any problem returning after almost two and half years outside Canada, with a PR card in hand but not SIN card.
Thank you

You should have no problem returning as long as your PR status is valid. You´re allowed to be outside of Canada for a total of 3 out of every 5 years (in any combination of time).

Not having a SIN card in hand does not affect your ability to return as a PR. SIN card is necessary for employment and retirement, and is unrelated to PR status and your PR card.

You should be fine to return. Be sure to get your SIN card at that time.

Iam where you were 2 years ago..... (in reply to: PR yes but no SIN returning after two and half yrs)
Hi worried, Iam glad Richard´s reply shows that you are in the clear now and can move into Canada with just the PR card. I am in a situation similar to what you did 2 years ago. Wondering, if you can give me some tips.

I am in US now and got my approval for immigrating to canada. However, i do not want to move right now and my visa is till Jan, 2008. I could go into Canada and do whatever paperwork i can do ... so that i can keep the option to move to canada open for a few more years. Is it possible? What is the best course of action (to fly to canada, get PR card...on those lines). My query here is too general or too basic, please bear with me because iam clueless about my options. If anyone can point out the link to similar post, that would be great too.

Thanks in advance.

If you received your approval to immigrate to Canada, that means you have an immigration visa affixed in your passport with an expiration date by when you must land. This date I´m assuming is Jan. 2008, as you indicate.

So, you must "land" on or before that date in order to keep your immigration status. Once you land, you then become a permanent resident. You do not need to stay in Canada, and if you wish, you can immediately leave and remain outside of Canada for up to 3 years without losing your permanent resident status.

The important thing is to "land" on or before that date and get PR status, then you have an open option on when to actually move (up to 3 years from that date).

that helps (in reply to: PR yes but no SIN returning after two and half yrs)
Hi Richard,

Thanks for the reply. That clarifies my confusion. I will
land in Canada and i do have a friend´s vancouver local
address. All i need to do is -
1. Have CIC send PR card to the address.
2. Go to Social office and apply for my SIN
before flying back to US.

I would appreciate if you can point out anything i might
be missing.

How much minimum time advisable to be in Canada (in reply to: PR yes but no SIN returning after two and half yrs)
I am working in Middle East as an Engineer for Oil and Gas projects. I have my Immigration approved and Visa stamped on my, my wife´s and my son´s passport. My son is working in US on H1B Visa. Our date stamped in 31March08 for the Visa.My wife and I have 10 years US multiple entry Visa.
We had indicated Calgary as city of stay in the application. Now, we intend to visit US and will get I94 cards. Can we enter Canada from any other port by road say Vancouver though in the application we stated Calgary?
Do we have to surrender the US I94 form when we leave US border and enter Canadian border?
How much is minimum time advisable for staying in Canada?
Can we get the PR card and SIN card by mail in US or middle east or do we have to give Canadian address?
For proof of funds, will our Bank Statement (from International Banks)would suffice or do we need to actually carry bank draft/check and/or travellers cards. Could Credit cards with Bank Statement suffice?

I indeed thank for the help
