Further to the article of the "Canadian Diaspora" if you subtract the number of Canadians who move south for the weather, our numbers fall right in line. I do U.S. immigration, and I know - there is no "brain drain", just a "temperature drain"! A few other facors skewing the numbers:
1. A Canadian passport is considered a very safe second passport, with huge numbers of Hong Kongese having dual citizenship. How many people have Japanese or Indian passports as a "second option?
2. For the past 15 years, the U.S. dollar differential meant U.S. jobs paid a lot more than Canadian jobs - not anymore!
3. Most of us live within 150 Km of the largest economy in the world. It has sucked up professional people from the world over for more than 40 years - why not from Canada especially when NAFTA visas are so easy? How many Chinese people move next door? To where? North Korea?
Again, with regards to demographics the old adage applies: "Trends are like horses. They are a lot easier to ride in the direction they are going!" If you are a believer or not, don´t bother to argue - like global warming - just wait!

Phil,

1. Brain drain is a serious issue indeed; if you are interested or care about it I can provide you several well conducted studies performed in Canada. I studied this carefully from both sides. It is evident that the debunkers of the brain drainage concepts mostly do a gross mistake. They simply try to show that the no. of Canadian graduates moving south is a small fraction of the total no. of graduates. Meaning they count graduates of history or lietrature in the same scale of Engineer or doctors. They try to forget that for science/Engineering the draining no. is very high. The good example may be the physician/nurse shortage in Canada.

Most alarming for Canada shouldn´t be the number., but the quality. All studies, including Stat Canada shows that, higher the level of degree, more likely the persons to move south. The guys moving south are within the top scorers of their class. Result? Recently an Ottawa based research firm ranked Canada as the lowest in Innovation among the developed countries despite having some classy worldclass Universities. Todays world is very cometitive, whoever have innovative technologies will rule the economy/world. So..

Good weather may be another reason, but definitely not the controlling one. Western Canada doesn´t have snow, but that "Good Temperature" alone can´t attract many Canadians. there. At least verbally most Canadians never acknowledge that they have any problem with harsh winter or snow. They consider that is a part of their life. So why is the question of temparature so important? Does it make much sense that a person born and brought up in a country just leaves his mother land because of temprature? Leaving behind his family..many sweet memories? Are all places of the USA are CA or FL? Don´t Canadians go to MN. MI or NY?

1. Do you ever think why the guys having Canadian passports stay outside of Canada? Hongkong or what ever? Aren´t by rough data/stat all of those countries are way inferior than Canada? Again refer to the post in the Vancouver Sun; Canadians are many times more likely to leave their country than Americans..Australians...British..even Indians..WHY? Amercian/UK/Aus. also allow dual citizenship. Why don´t the Hongkong born Aussies or Americans leave US or UK at that rate?

2. Not all of a sudden Canadian dollar got the hike. I don´t believe that because of this the brain drainage will be stopped or reversed. Again, the example of 1952s..when Canadian dollar was higher than US....Another funny thing is that, Stat Canada also reports that higher the salary level more likely to leave. Why is that? That simply tells that money is not the controlling factor also. Major controlling factor is the lack of appropriate oppurtunities in Canada.

3. It is true that being closer to US, Canada is more likely to lose it´s products. However, mustn´t be in that extent. Australians (E3) also has ssomething similar to TN. Above all, if they wish the US visa waiver citizens can enter into USA at any time for job hunting. H-1 Visa can be managbale for them as well. Thankfully they don´t feel that urgency like the Canadians feel.

Lets forget about US, why did 675,000 Canadians (not even including the PRs) had to leave for many Asian countries (much lower living)? Don´t tell me that they are all naturalized citizens..returned home after getting the valuable blue passport. Please read this article http://www.thestar.com/article/238305.

I even can ask the validity of this estimated nos. These must be lower than the real figures. For an example, most of the exodus nos are determined based on the Tax info alone. Which may be very misleading. Many perosns leaving abroad file Tax in Canada every eyar like a resident. So, officially they are still in Canada. Many Canadian PRs working/leaving in the US are within this category. Many Canadians are even illegally working in the US.

I like the way Phil finishes his arguments.... funny guy !!

Anyway, I think Canada is doing a great job by allowing anyone and everyone to migrate, because of the amount of money that the immigrants bring in to their country and spend it in the local economy, think about it, its free money.
And lets face it, immigrants who feel they cannot survive, move out of the country anyway. Who would want to lose that ?
US gets cheap labor from Mexico, Canada does not have that advantage.... soooo.... get it ??

I think its in Canada´s best interest to prevent immigrants from learning about what they really should expect, so all you see is mountain peaks and virgin rivers flowing through fertile land, paints a pretty picture eh ?

As far as the refugees are concerned, I think they deserve Canada, what kind of choice do they have ? Death or Canada .... thats one good thing that Canada does for humanity, I salute her for that.

And oh... "temperature drain" ..... gosh ! grow up... no really !!
