Subject: Questions about Landing in Montreal QC by car

Hi,

We are newly approved of the immigration visa to Canada within federal skilled worker category. Currently, we both are students holding F-1 visa in U.S., will not move to Canada completely until after the graduation next year. However, we are planning to do the landing paperwork next month and encounter severval not-sure questions regarding our trip planning:

1. In our CPR forms, Toronto ON is listed beside DEST. But we have a relative in Montreal, so can we enter Canada through the board in QC from Albany, U.S. by car(From route I-87 in U.S. continous to AUT-15 in Canada) ?

2. We only plan to do the landing paperwork at this time, will need the car to drive back to U.S. within one or two weeks. How can we declare our own car at the board entry? Do we need to list it as personal items this time(we own the car, but may not keep it when completely moving to Canada next year)? or can we list it as goods-to-follow to avoid importation procedure this time? Also, are there any regulations regarding driving a U.S. registered car in Canada temporarily(such as insurance coverage) ?

Many thanks to your information sharing,

qwumd

Hi, you dont have to declare your car at board entry. They are just going to check your passports and visa. Maybe a car search! Depends on the circumstances. I say this because I have been many times in canada as a visitor, I have been crossing the borders and they always have checked my documents only. I usually cross the border from Detroit, MI. You can also drive tamporarely a U.S registered car in Canada for at least a year. Your insurance will cover the car there too. After you relocate there I believe you have to buy canadian insurance.

I read you are an F-1 visa student. I am too. I´m about to finish this semester from Wayne State University here in Detroit. I´ve been looking for ways how to get canadian permanent residence, but I find it very hard to acumulate 67 points neccessary for the application. Since I am about to finish school in December, I dont have job experience, not even a job offer at least from a canadian emplyer. I looked also at those provincial nomenees packages online but there also require a job offer or relatives in Canada which I dont have any.
I would like to know how did you succeded in your application for residence in Canada. If it is any way you can help me with information how to apply successfully for permanent residence in Canada, I would really appreciated. I am also ready to pay real money for some useful advice.

Thanks in advance,

Erald

more similar cases there? and reach 67 points (in reply to: Questions about Landing in Montreal QC by car)

Hi Erald,

Thank you for your reply and experience. I think you were traveling to Canada as a visitor from U.S., I am wondering if the procedure could be different in the case of making landing there at the first time, which is what we are gonna do. Our conern is whether we can avoid the importation of our car to Canada this time when we are driving it across the board soly as a convenient transportation means. We wonder if there are more similar cases out there to share? though, your experience is helpful as well.

As to accumulating those 67 points, our application might have benefited from some advantages over education and previous work experience and having relatives in Canada. Based upon what you said about your situation, I think your case could sound abit easier if more than one year of work experience is earned(15-21 points) . Since you are about to graduate, you may focus on finding a job in U.S. with applying for OPT. Also, learning some French could be another way to collect some more points(upto 8). Married couple has advantage too.

If you are young fresh graduate, don´t worry too much right now. Once the experience is gained over the following one or two years, the road along the application process will look far open for sure.

Good luck and let me know if I can be more helpful as well,

qwumd

You do not have to declare your car at landing; simply include it on your goods to follow list. However, you may NOT land in Quebec as a Federal Skilled worker; you must have applied under the Quebec program. You MAY live there after landing, but you cannot land there.

Most US car insurers insure a US registered car in Canada for temporary (vacation) purposes. Check with yours if it is a concern.

Hope this helps.

hello qwumd,

I believe the procedure is the same in both visitor and immigrant landing cases. You just prepare for some time(be patient 1 hr) in front of the window at the immigration officer when asks you questions, routine questions, not a big deal, and the registration of the passports in their system.

Thank you for the information provided about my situation.
I want to apply for alberta provincial nominee program, but they require at least a job offer. My question is did you guys have a job offer from a canadian emplyer? If yes, tell me the steps you followed in finding it. It is gonna help me a lot. I´m a F-1 status too. If not, if you now someone who got a job offer from a canadian employer let me know. I want to follow his/her pattern. My e-m is eraldi@yahoo.com

Thanks one more time.

good luck in canada
