Most of the time by passport entry seal.

Sometimes no way as some countries do not stamp. Specially if you enter Canada from the USA by road then most of the time no seal.

If you are from India, I understand New Delhi International Airport provides entry AND exit stamps.

You may not get caught coming back, if you are for example, going back to India. But if you reapply to come back to Canada, you can be pretty sure that the visa officer will ask to see your passport, and will very easily determine if you overstayed.

Then, you´re hooped...

Anonymous is absolutely correct.

However, most of the times if the immigration officeers aren´t sneaky, they just ask you like how long were you outside and don´t check all of the tampings in the passports. It takes time also to check all of entry/exit dates as they are all haphazard.

If the img. officers ca trust you, then please don´t break their trust, ruin the system and thus make others life tougher. Just a friendly advise.

This is especially true when traveling by car to/from the states. However in 2008 passports will be required even here.

So in that case, border crossings will be logged. As Bill had said previously, the border officer (both U.S. and Canadian) just has to swipe your passport in his system (with no visible stamping necessary) and the crossing will be entered into the computer database.

Richard,

Most prooably you are talking about machine readable passport. I don´t think that is in near furture. It´ll take many years to have all PR having machine readable passports. In fact, still many countries issue hand written passport; they write names..dob..etc by hand.

DC,
That´s true. However all visa-waiver passport holders (for both U.S. and Canada) are by now required to have machine readable passports. Border crossings are tracked therefore by swiping.

I believe you´re refering to the visa-required countries that have not yet adopted machine-readable passports. In those cases, it doesn´t matter since visas are required in order to enter/leave both U.S. and Canada. As a result, crossing the border would therefore be tracked for visa stamping and recording.

Yes Richard, I specifically meant for the non Visa waiver PP holders. It´ll take many years for them to have machine readable PP.

It doesn´t work always like you said.

Canadian PR (non US visa waivers) need visa to enter US, US Img. give entry seal, correct. BUT, when he/she enters again Canada specially by road, most likely he/she willn´t get entry date stamping by the CDN. Img. They just visually check the PP/PR card and few formal questions and thats it.

DC,
Yes, PRs entering Canadfa would just need to show PR card and thats´ it. But, I believe the Canadian immigration office can swipe the PR card for logging (if I´m not mistaken).

But in any event, those non-visa waiver PP holders would be logged on the U.S. side, since they have a visa for the U.S.

I know the original poster wanted to know what happens on the Canadian side. And I think we appreciate that he/she was not planing anything untrustworthy. But it´s good to know what´s tracked and what´s going on.

Richard,

Bottom line is in Canadian side, if you enter by road, most likely you won´t get stamp in the PP, no PR card sweping, just formal questions..that´s it. So no proof that you entered in May or Dec. Isn´t it? That´s why it is hard to track for the CIC, as far as I know they also don´t want to dig this much because of such loop holes. Some countries even don´t give stamping.

I also gave him a freindly reminder and he he assured us.
