| Subject: Can my girlfriend work in Canada(Shes from the US) |

I´m Canadian, my girlfriend is American. We lived together for a year in Kansas City in the U.S. Now I´m back in Canada finishing school and I want to bring her here. Someone recently told me that if you live with someone for a year or more, they are eligible to live and work in Canada because I´m a citizen. Any truth to this? If not, anyone know what process we should take? Thanks.

there are 3 options under family class - all involve sponsoring her. To qualify, you must be currently living common law (minimum of 1 year), be married, or be facing some significant reason why you both cannot be married in which you would apply as conjugal. Conjugal is extremely rare and difficult to be successful.
You must satisfy CIC that your relationship is genuine and permanent.
there is 2 phases to the process - they approve you, then they approve your girlfriend. If she is living with you in Canada she is not entitled to work until she receives a permit which usually accompanies your approval (taking several months). The quickest route is her remaining in the US while you are in Canada.

Well I´m born n raised in Canada so I can work anywhere. That isnt the problem. So after one year we can qualify as commom law? Its definitly permanent, we just cant afford to get married right now. What steps should I take to bring her here if common law is the best route?

yes, you are Canadian and can work. But she cannot until she receives a permit. could be 6-8 months.
you need to show that you have been living together for a minimum of 1 year. If you are in different cities and have been separated for an extended period of time, that will present some challenges.
