Subject: US Citizen to work in Toronto, Visa questions?
  Hello,

I´m a US Citizen who wants to work in Toronto. There´s lots of jobs out there in my field (specialized version of marketing) in Toronto, but I want to know the best way to proceed. Does it make most sense for me to:

(a) Apply for jobs first without doing anything with Canada immigration
(b) Apply for PR status given that I have enough points without the job offer
(c) Apply for PR status if/when I get a job offer
(d) Something else

Any thoughts on this would be appreciated. I just want to make sure I go about the most logical route from the start.

Thanks

All depends on how soon you want to start.

PR process is a lenghty one, may take more than an year.

You can proceed for temporary work permit or TN (NAFTA if approved.

So the temp. work permit or TN (Nafta) wouldn´t be hard to get right? Should I be looking at jobs first and waiting to get the offer, or trying to get one of these first?

Thanks for the help thus far!

I´m actually not familiar with temp work permit/Canadian TN. I know that those could be your options and temporary work permit is not difficult to obtain. You´ll need to have HRDC approval for that with a job offer.

Good news is if you have long term plan (PR) then probably can apply for PR while working in temp. permit.

Here is the NAFTA Occupation List. http://www.immigrate.net/law/en/JobinCanada/NAFTA.asp

If your occupation is not on the list you will need an employer able to hire a foreign national by obtaining authorization from Human Resources Skill Developement Canada (HRSDC) also referred to as a LMO.

A LMO or Labour Market Opinion can take several months depending on the province, city etc. or just over a week. The employer must comply with procedures as well.

Then after receiving your LMO you need to apply for a work permit which should not take very long through Buffalo RPC.

Good Luck

Sounds good. Thanks for laying out all the details there. Do you have any idea how long we are talking for Toronto? Is this something that employers usually are willing to do for a job that requires a specific skill / certification which I have?

Your employer may, however in order to obtain an LMO your employer must demostrate to the government that she/he could not find a Canadian citizen or a Permanent resident to fill that position.

Time Question hmmmm

An awful lot depends on the occupation and how much of a demand there is, plus how many others with that occupation are having employers seek a LMO for them from HRSDC. Normally 2-5 weeks for construction workers.
