Thanks for suggestion for my "end-of-lease-before-moving-to-Canada" issue. We have the appartment until Jan. 31 and we have until Nov. 30 to say if we want to renew it for the next 6 months.

So theoretically I still have 28 days for CIC to respond to us.

The month-to-month would be the best solution if it works. What I am afraid is that I would renew the lease on Dec.1 for example then get PPR on Dec. 2 or something funny like that. Breaking the lease cost 2-months rent in our case.

Come to think of it, I wonder on how other immigrants deal with these things. It must have happened to so many. Subleasing is stricly prohibited where we live.

Actually it is interesting to see how this "waiting" make us to put so many things on hold. Last night I received the car registration renewal due December 31 2007, but if we get PPR in November then we don´t need to renew the registration as we would sell the car.

So in fact I started making a pile of "things to be done/paid if we are still in US" like the appt insurance renewal ....

We have so many things ending in Dec./Jan that it would make it perfect to leave at that time, hence our eagerness to get PPR.

I guess that I should be happy that my job here is still on for another year ...

Are you prepared to move into Canada fully right after getting visa within 3/7 days?

Why don´t you bring the car in Canada? In Canada, anything related with auto is expensive, starting from price..gas..insurance..parts..

About Auto insurance, if you have to pay 6 months in one time, most likely you can cancel it and get the refund for the reminder period. So far I´m customer of Geico & Progessive, both give this option. I think it is generic.

I see your biggest problem with the Apt.

Are you planning to resign from your current job right after you get PR? If so, how many days notice is required at your workplace? You may pla your resignation according to the notice period to avoid issues with your current employer.

We can´t take the car with us because we plan to land by plane. We won´t reach Canada from US. We can fly for free to Canada with our miles but with car it will be expensive and it is too long to drive there with 20-month old toddler! :)

Our US car insurance ends early Feb. again a good time to leave. And we are prepared for the cost of car-related issue in Canada.

Good point! I did not take any vacation for almost a year so my plan was to play around with my paid leave (added at the end) and leave earlier than the resignation date. But you are right, I have to look into that.

Our appt issue is a real problem because they will start pestering us soon and the deadline is strict. That is why we get so tense about this PPR. Eventually it is all a matter of money. Of course we can renew the lease and break it off and pay the money.

Anyway it is nice to get suggestions from experienced people like you. If I get PPR this month we should have a "virtual party" :) ....

I think you dont have to renew the lease, most apartments in my knowledge let you go month to month. the rent is usually higher by $100-200, but its better than paying 2 months rent. Also check your lease agreement, there should only be a 30 days notice instead of 60. 60 days is usually if you break the lease.

I am suggesting 60 days so the landlord is more willing to accept a month to month agreement after the lease expires.

CBV- do you have to go to Toronto? To be perfectly honest, it is overloaded with new Canadians all fighting for the exact same jobs. The weather is the pits, and the lifestyle goes along with it.

If you consider Vancouver, I would be pleased to give you any assistance I can. I respect your attitude and I really want to see you settle successfully. I am not sure what your education and training looks like - perhaps I can point you in the right directions.

I told my retail story only because it happened that very day. I hear about people not able to get good staff all the time - true it is not engineering jobs etc - but I am not near that industry so I don´t have those conversations. I do know that getting services from those types of professions are difficult and the quality of work is not the greatest at the moment. Common reason - they can´t get good workers.

So, the offer is there.

Please don´t be discouraged by all the negative chatter. Hopefully you read it for what it is. I think of it as the merry gang of sour grapes. We all know moving and settling is tough. You have already done it once so you know the traps. I have no doubt that you will do well.

If immigration was so terrible, why would there be 1 million applicants waiting for their turn. You would think that the reality would have found its way back to those at home and the lines would have dried up by now. So either everyone is deceiving friends and family back home or there are a few folks out there that have determined that what they have found is better than what they left behind.

Anyway, thanks for being the lonely voice of optimism around here. You keep me coming back.

Just got my internet back!

Thanks all for your suggestion, I feel very happy to get so much responses. I will keep you updated.

Thanks Sharon for your support.

Vancouver could be an option for us, we´ll see .. I have a PhD in physics ... can´t work in US because most of the jobs I could do requires US citizenship ...

Anyway thanks again. I will keep you informed.
Regards

Wow, I can´t begin to imagine what sort of jobs might be tied to physics. Please, educate me. Obviously teaching at the college or university with your level of education but what else? Aerospace?

Sciences turn my brain to mush :)
