not only did the Canadian dollar tip over $1.07 today, our job numbers came out.

The Canadian dollar gained almost two full cents against the U.S. greenback Friday following the release of a surprisingly strong jobs report in Canada.

The loonie closed the trading day at $1.0704 US, up 1.92 cents from Thursday.

It´s now at its highest level against the U.S dollar since the Canadian currency was allowed to float in 1950.
____
The Canadian economy added 63,000 jobs in October, pushing the jobless rate down 0.1 of a percentage point to 5.8 per cent ? a 33-year low.

U.S. job growth was also much stronger than expected in October, adding 166,000 jobs when about 80,000 additions had been expected.
____

While the US definitely added more jobs than Canada we need to consider the fact that the population of the US is 10 times that of Canada. If we were to compare by percentage - the US would have needed to add 630,000 jobs in October rather than 166,000 jobs.

Analysts noted today that the Canadian dollar is the strongest currency in the world at the moment and the fastest expanding economy.

If we are accepting 115,000 skilled workers annually and we added 63,000 jobs to the economy in October alone... we have a serious problem.

I got a call from a retail merchant yesterday hoping I might know of someone looking for a job. $15 an hour as a sales clerk - he can´t find anyone. Out of 200 retail stores that I work with there are at least 150 jobs without people to fill them, all paying $13-15 per hour.

Great News no doubt.

So, we can expect now to shout for more immigrants as very soon the unemployment will be negative. Very good, if it is so then immigration must be justified. Who would deny? Just very curious, in the serious labor shortage, what % is for the high educated ones that we discuss about? If we look to fill out 13-15 $ hr. shop clerk by the Engineers, IT specialits..then who really cares! Just they should be told before bringing.

As far as I see this October boost is mostly attributed by Ontario, most notably in health care and social assistance, "other services", and public administration.

Most probably last year in this site somone was arguing that in AB Tim Horton was paying 50,000$ + full benifits to it´s help associates. Excellent news no doubt.

DC- I fully respect your opinion and your bad experience but must you insist on hostility post after post. We got your point. Canada did not work for you. We´re sorry. Now, please stop pissing in everyone elses cornflakes ever chance you get. Geesh.

The news tonight says Ontario is slowing down due to the high percentage of manufacturing jobs. BC and Alberta are at ´full employment´.

not that I am aware of but I have not been around most of the day.

The webmaster may be playing with the platform. He and I had a brief conversation late last week about possible improvements to the site. I asked if active posts can move to the top of the first page and for there to be a way to delete a problem post without deleting the entire thread.

He was going to see if he could do it for us.

Sharon,

I didn´t see anything contradictory that I wrote. Never did I keep repeat what happened to me in Canada. Did I? I don´t have any intent to attack anybody personally. Geeh! I always prefer to discuss with logic.

I didn´t express any doubt when you told the story of unavailabiliy of clerk even at 13-15$, very much possible. If Tim Horton is looking for associates with 50K + why not? If it is so, great news. Congrats.

About BC, I posted something for you in the "Subject: Sharon... what happened last evening ??" thread, please read. Looks like I´m not only the conspirator, lot of others, even in your very BC.

I also had asked the webmaster to provide that functionality and upgrade the software. I think he/they are too tight on the wallet and don´t want to spend any energy on this.

(Now I know why I couldn´t post. Included a website in my comments.)

DC has always provided thoughtful and intelligent input as well as civility that has often been missing here. Although I´m on the other side of the issues and don´t agree with much of his opinions and conclusions, I much respect his views. As I said earlier, I think it´s always healthy to have all points of view in a forum.

As far as today´s news. We should realize this is all only temporary, so not to get too excited. The U.S. dollar is in a funk because of the disastrous Iraq war and incompetent Republican administration. Next year, the Democrats will sweep into all branches of government and things will change. The US dollar will resume it´s normal exchange rate and people will be clamoring even more to immigrate to the States.

I saw "Broken Dreams" again from Canadian TV channel CTV last night and it made me pause. However, those sad immigration stories also occur in the U.S. The problem (or as I see it generosity) is that Canada allows immigration for those with education and skills without having a job already confirmed. I noticed the Canadian immigration minister was practically stuttering when asked to comment about points from the website NotCanada_._com. And this documentary from Canada´s 2nd largest national TV network.

But after watching this documentary, I started to think why do immigrants expect everything to be waiting for them on a platter at the airport: nice job, car, house, etc. Canada is a very large country with a relatively small population. It doesn´t have the kind of resources and economic infrastructure as its superpower neighbor to the south. Yet the expectations are as if it did.

I think everything needs to be understood in balance and perspective.

there is no doubt in my mind that the economy will adjust and the dollar with it. Economics are cyclical. But my goodness, the Canadian economy is at the front of the line for just a moment - can´t we enjoy it for 10 minutes???

DC has lots of good things to say but lately he can´t seem to find them unless it bashes Canada.

I agree with you Richard about the expectations.

Richard,

I can´t remember how many times I mentioned about the minsiters version, specially after hearing that Fed ex mnister Volpe it must be clwar to anybody that he has no clue aboiut the immigration. Those men are controling the immigration for many years with lot of blind supports. What would you expect?

The website´s name you mentioned is banned here:). Nice gesture of openness.

Why do immigrants expect everything to be waiting...?

It is not like that. They aren´t naive or stupid enough to expect such, though not clear what did you mean by everything. They expect at least a fair chance to compete. If they are over expecting then the blame should go to the folks who misguides them by showing only one sided picture. Superpower south may be blamed for many things duly, but they don´t commit such hypocrisy.

Forget about the new comer immigrants, did you read how the high educated Canadian born Asian decedents are leaving Canada? Read the extract that I post in "Subject: Sharon... what happened last evening". It is from the job mine BC. You are absolutely correct, how can immigrants expect to be successful here? Probably just by positive will power or looking at the unemployment rate, higher loonie.

I always try to be polite with everybody as much as I can. This BC news I could´ve posted much earlier. If I had the intention of just intimidating people I have several instruments like that in my aresenal which I can post everyday. I only post those if I´m poked. This is my way of expressing frustration, not personal attack or Geeh/Gosh.

Like I said before, I see Doctors, Engineers, Professors etc. filling menial jobs in Canada. Most of them are not even insured by their employers and they declare themselves employed!! If Canada is proud to fill such jobs and get big numbers. it is indeed Sad. The US on the other hand shows numbers filled by professionals IN THEIR RESPECTIVE FIELDS!!

Its a shame that all employers Sharon deals with are lookng for Sales clerks while professionals are immigrating to Canada with big dreams. If you are expecting highly skilled professionals to fill Sales clerks positions, then you are insulting the immigrants!

BTW I dont understand why only Sharon can see only the positive side while all others see the positives with the negatives!
