Subject: Legally Stayed for 1 year, What does it mean?
  Hi There,

I am an Asian Masters degree holder and eying to get admission in an UK College to get a Masters degree in a field related to my Interest of IT. Now, My Ultimate goal is to get a Canadian Immigration in Skilled Category.

Currently I have 4 years of Working experience in the field of I.T and in the category which is required by Immigration Canada. As I can see, there is no respite to Reduce the time of 4-5 years of waiting from now before I can have my Immigration application finalized. So Is there any chance that I can go to UK, stay there for 3-4 years for my Masters and Ph.d and then I would be applying for CAN Immigration after 1 year of staying in the UK, coz the queue of application from there is much shorter than that is from the Indian Subcontinent.

I somewhere read that I can apply from a country where I am a legal Visa holder for a year. So Can i take this chance? Can anyone clarify?
Sharon or others?

After you have stayed in UK for one year on your student visa (legally) then you can apply from UK for canadian immigration. You can take the self assesment test online. From what you wrote I am sure you would pass the 67 point goal.
I wish you luck. Your plan sounds good.

Most probably it means that to be eligible to use any country as your application station, you have to enter that country legally for at least 1 year. I know that is the rule for applying from the USA.

Sorry, I am not sure if you have to stay in the country for one year or just getting admitted for one year or more is sufficient...

Hi Jnathan

If you are admitted into the country for at least one year (i.e. the visa on your passport is stamped for at least one year), you can apply as soon as you get an address in that country. You don?t have to complete a year before applying. I made exactly the same mistake because I was told that you have to have stayed in that country for a year before applying, that is not true. Please be careful whose advice you take on these forums, some people will advice even when they don?t know, because they want to look and sound important.

As for the UK (where I applied), the queue is certainly very long. There are apparently over 90,000 applications waiting to be processed (yes, I typed that correctly, ninety thousand). This is from a Canadian visa officer who spoke at an immigration exhibition last month. If you are going to apply in the UK, my suggestion is apply as soon as you get here. Waiting will only extend the queue.

Is it true there are that many applications from Britain? What the heck is going on in that country? Their economy is doing much better than Canada! I hope most of those applications are from temporary immigrants there rather than British citizens.

Trying to get certain individuals to defend Canada????

Oh here we go again! Do we have to defend Canada´s economy over the Brits??? Check out any stats about the failing US green back and anyone can inform anyone that of the G8 economies Canada is stronger.

I just watched Micheal Moores SICKO about people coming to Canada etc. etc. to get medical treatment. This country has something better then other countries and it is a little better here then there, TRUE!

If anyone decides to immigrate is because just like most cows they believe the grass is greener on the other side of the fence. Sometimes it is and sometimes it isn´t.

If you want to live in a city were every second your on a CCTV camera then live in London. If not pick a Canadian city research what is required. Be prepare that everything might not be exactely as your research has led you to believe but enjoy living in a WE society.

When you have low expectations you obtain what you expect.

I do not sell Canada I assist those with what they want.

To comply with regulation 11 (1) you only have to reside in that country and you have had to be admitted for one year.

If you have stayed after your work permit or student visa has expired do not worry as long as you can prove you were admitted for one year and that you reside there is sufficent.

Search for the IRPA manuals and read OP2

Thanks for some Excellent Replies from the old participants like Sharon, Ray, Roy ,Departed, Zigzag, Low. My God, Thanks for that info that only 90K applications are pending from the UK ; guess what if that number is comapared with 500K from the Indian subcontinent. Lol. I forgot for a Psychological theory , I always tend to look for alternative channels to reach my goal in the shortest path possible. And this forum has always helped me finding those ways relating to CAN Immigration.

I myself visited Canada before, its a country as you want it to be for your life. Deserve, Desire for it, See the light on the other side of the Tunnel ! thats Canada.

London would normally tighten their security for their own safety, Any country would do it if they felt insecured. And Indeed, CAN currency is at least 3 cents higher now in the Int´l Currency market.

Hi Jnathan, You are very welcome. I tried to help you, just tried. Goodluck. I believe you will succeed in life because you sound like you are well prepared for the future. Enjoy your life and let nothing keep you back.

Ray: I do not want to look or sound important... If u read my posts I said I was not sure if you have to stay for 1 yr or be admitted for one year. I was not trying to give wrong or bad advice. I just said what I knew. Don´t have to be rude. Say your say and let that be it.
I am glad you could help this person out with your RIGHT advice. Good for you! I was trying to help, but I guess comments like yours leave so many posts without replies...

Relax Zigzag I had just watched SICKO and then I read Low Expectations. I saw too many good Americans not being covered properly by their health care system and then her/him complaining about the Canadian economy. Weird!

At least if a Canadian or a temporary worker in Canada accidentally cuts off two of his fingers there would be no decision as to putting back on one or both fingers.

Lost sleep over that movie.
