Subject: Defaulted Canadian loans
I received a letter in the mail yesterday from Revenue Services of BC stating "Final collection notice" and that I owe $740 for "Employment and Assistance Debt". They don´t go into detail about what this is for and I´m wondering myself as I have been off social assistance for nearly 4 years and have never been contacted about this before even though I´ve always had an up to date address with Revenue Canada. They go on to say in the letter "Accordingly, we have notified Canada Revenue Agency to set off monies owing to you against this debt. The balance owing is no due and payable.". They say I have 14 days to contact them to settle this matter. I plan on calling them on Tuesday when their office opens as it´s closed for the holidays.
Will this debt effect my application to sponsor my husband for PR? We got married in September and sent his immigration application out on October 10th. I´m stressing out now that I´m going to be denied as a sponsor because of this debt. Had I known about this debt I would have paid it off before applying!! I tried looking up on Immigration Canada´s website about defaulted loans and all they talk about are previous immigration loans, court ordered support payments, and performance bonds.
I also defaulted on student loans from going to school years and years ago. I am slowly repaying them back but I´m wondering now if those will effect my ability to sponsor as well. It never crossed my mind before receiving this letter in the mail though.

Can anyone help? Thanks in advance.

no, it should not cause problems but I would make every effort to clear it up ASAP so CIC can see that the file is now clear.

The loans won´t stop your sponsorship application since it is your spouse you are sponsoring. However, I think you should call ´em up and find out where the debts come from! Once you agree that it is legit debt you might clear it or else dispute! good luck.
