I think once you get your PR you have to spend a minimum of 3 years in Canada out of 5 to retain it.

When does clock start for this period? Does it start the day you land first time or it starts when visa is stamped on passport?

Its 730 days (2 years) out of 5 and starts from the day you land in Canada.

Samm,

I think it is upto when your PR card is issued and expired. My wife landed in May, she got her PR card for some complicacies in October. Her validity of PR card is October (off course 5 years ahead), not May.

DC,

Think about a person who landed in Canada did not apply for PR card and came back. He goes back after one year and applies for PR card. Now, what would be his residency requirement? One can easily think of many more instances such as someone applying for renewal of PR card and then leaving Canada for more than three years etc.

This is my understanding: you may have valid PR card but you may have lost your PR status due to residency requirement.

Samm,

Your argument is logical.

I told earlier based on assuming that you already got the PR card in hand.

I thing at the POE immigration officers first check the expiration date of your card, then ask how long did you stay outside. If have any doubt, then check your entry/exit seals...if farther doubt, then bring in a separate room for detail inquiry.

In short, by the book your clock starts at the day of landing. BUT practically you have some grace period printed on your PR card.
