Better move to North pole, by the way things are going, that should be the best place in a few years ... LOL

LOL.

Really, this UN ranking is nothing but a joke like their parents role.

May help some immigration lawyers/consultants to build rosy websites though.

Iceland´s interesting because almost all of its food has to be imported, with no local fresh produce. As a matter of fact, almost everything is imported, making the cost of goods quite expensive.

Immigration is restricted with the requirement to learn a medieval version of Norwegian. The only real travel destination outside Reykavik is the single highway circling the flat, frozen volcanic interior.

Yet it´s the hot (not literally) destination of choice! Go figure.

This funny UN ranking means that not all evaluation, stats are realistic. It has to be the reflection of real life.

If look closely, UN ranking overlooks mostly the economic factors..mostly emphasizes on the humanatarian factors.

Also, average doesn´t always mean a lot. Statistically, average is reliable only when it is closer to the Sd. Deviation.

Example, average of 99 and 1 is 50; also average of 50+50 is 50. Which set is more preferable? Average only says that they are the same.

Hey, its not bad as I initially thought weather wise.... check out some facts....

Winter

The Icelandic winter is relatively mild in comparison to its latitude. The southerly lowlands of the island average around 0?C in winter, whilst the highlands tend to average around ?10?C. The lowest temperatures in the northern part of the island range from around ?25?C to ?30?C. The lowest temperature on record is ?39.7?C.

Summer

The average July temperature in the southern part of the island is 10?C. Warm summer days can reach 20?25?C. The highest temperature recorded was above 30?C.

----------------------------

76% of its land area is untouched, not used for anything.... wow, and its the 2nd largest island in Europe !!
-----------------------------------------------------
Ok, how about Canada, I know its huge and we also know how people want to crowd the south border, probably weather related.... but do you think native Canadians move to Queen Elizabeth island from say Ontario ? If yes, then what really motivates them to make the move ?

Yes DC, every article has to be taken with a grain of salt. I just thought that it was funny that the best place over the past few years in such studies is creeping up in latitude.... LOL.

Raj,

I don´t think this is more absolute good or bad.

In fact, I also concur that Iceland, Finland those countries are very peaceful, also have nice nature to enjoy. I have a freind came to Canada from Finland and came back there after 3 months saying he was better there.

Problem arises when people start quoting this UN ranking to determine the suitability of immigration or comparing different countries. Then it becomes more comparing Apple to Orange. Countless number of people got fool by this UN ranking for the immigration purpose.

I´ve been to Iceland a few times, and once outside the capital, it´s really desolate. Beautiful, but desolate and not travelable other than in the summer due to harsh weather. The highway is closed in the winter.

As fart as peaceful (in the political sense), Iceland was member of the "coalition of the willing", contributing troops to the Iraq War. As far as natural beauty, yes, desolation can be quite peaceful. It´s not that similar to the Scandinavian countries, except in the extreme northern geographies.

By the way, Bobby Fisher (chess master) has found home there.

Good to know Richard from your personal experience.

Those countries don´t get much attention and kind of stay away from our plain sight.

DC, true, these countries are usually out of sight, but then why is this one the top destination per Raj´s reference I wonder. I think it´s as you said, peaceful, isolated, and remote from the world´s troubles and hot spots.

In many ways, that´s why Canada is on this list. Peaceful and relatively remote. Time to rethink, DC.

Interesting article, thanks Raj!
So what ? Canada is #4 ?

It is funny to think that Iceland can be the best place to live though I have never been there I cannot judge. From Richard´s point of view sounds not so attractive.

DC ? I had also a friend from Finland ... also went back there because it was better.

So do we have a trend here ? the colder the better ???

That same old page...

I wish only peace & remote places would meet daily needs as per my calibre.

You also acknowledge that Iceland is not a very atractive place for relocation despite being peaceful & desolate. Same thing goes for Canada to me. It has definitely lot to offer than Iceland, still that can´t help me much which I clealry sensed by by own experience.

Can you believe that 30% families in Toronto are under the poverty line? Just published yesterday.
http://www.thestar.com/article/279839

Toronto is the hub of the immigrants...

know the unemployment rate of the immigrants? 37%.

Richard, sorry to disappoint you, but ethnicity plays a vital role in Canada. I have no control over it by birth.

So, as my well wisher would you still tell me to rethink?
