Subject: Re: Transit Visa
  Hello everyone,

I have been asking and wondering about the so called "TRANSIT VISA".
Why does one need a transit visa if he/she is stuck inside the airport, not passing through the passport control, not passing the custom check and not going anywhere else but changing a plane?

I am educated enough (I believe) to differentiate between the ordinary Americans and their stupid politicians. So, please (Americans who read this) do not over react. I do not need this visa myself but I guess everyone is getting tired from this American paranoia and all the American ERA. I remember in US they wanted and started to finger-print every foreign visitor. When the Brazilians started to apply the same on American visitors, GW Bush and his rally dogs around him, were protesting the Brazilian action. DUH!!!

I accept I may be wrong and ignorant. I am quite happy and grateful if someone can explain and enlight me please.
Thanks

Sutar,

Not to defend the Americans, but such Transit Visa is required to many other countries, like UK, even Hongkong..

Anyway I also have no explanation other than some money earning by visa fee.

I´m curious, looks like you are a transit passenger through the US, that is not very common.

No I am not a transit passenger. As said above, I do not need visa.
UK, HongKong and others are simply following the steps (or say orders) of Uncle Sam.
They can take the visa money but I just need someone to explain it to my little brain.

I never heard anybody holding or applying for US transit visa. Do they have any visa category for that?

My little thought is; it may prevent a transit passenger claiming assylum?

TRANSIT VISA IS MANDATORY NOWADAYS. IF SOMEONE IS GOING TO CANADA THROUGH US AIRPORTS, HE/SHE NEEDS TRANSIT VISA (IF NOT WAIVED).
I must say that "to perevent transit passenger claiming assylum" is a very good point. I have never thought about it before. Yes, if this is the motivation then I agree. However all these restrictions were imposed after the terrorism era.

Dear SutarB,

Any person who arrives on US soil MUST declare customs and Immigration upon arrival, even if they are transiting the US.

That way US dpt of Homeland Secutiry can verify under their biometrics scanners, identity and verify who is entering the US.

A person who is transiting the US actually needs to clear customs and Immigration, the only difference is the amount of time that they are allowed to remain in the States.

There are no boarding rooms behind the terminals for Passport control.

And of course Americans are paranoic. 3/4 of the world doesn´t like us, what do you expect?

Take care

Cheers

Bill

US is paranoid about it´s secuity no one can deny.

However, just you need transit visa doesn´t justify that alone.

Many countries in the world have that system. If you don´t like then simply avoid those countries and select your flight. Canada has several direct flights coming out of North America (not sure about the latin).

I know the hassle of obtaining US visa, I would rather go for spending few hundreds extra than going for their tedious visa process.

Justification? Who knows?

Only thing I can say, if you want to come to a country you have to follow their rules, don´t expect the opposite. Though Like Sutar said, I would also laugh if US Govt. criticized the same rule for them in Brazil. They at least honor their own rules.

About justification? What would justify you to take the IELTS for Canadian immigration if you have a North American degree, living/working there for amny years? You are holding a Ph.D...The same thing...have to go by the rules set by the country.
