Subject: What's the best place to settle in Toronto
Hi,
I will be moving to Canada next year, although I have never been there. Can some one give me tips on where to go and not to go in Toronto, and what is the safest area to settle in Toronto?

Many thanks!

Depends... (in reply to: What's the best place to settle in Toronto)
Depends what do you value.
If you have children I guess you would look for quality schools and good schools, if you are high tech with no kids I guess Toronto downtown would be your better choice.
If you are black (with all the respect) you would probably feel more comfortable in Scarborough area where many black people live, if you are Chineese then either Chinatown or Markham would be your choise (again with all the respect).

Toronto is a large variety city many call it "The Livable City".
Tell us more about yourself and what you value the most.

Sanella,

Thank you very much. No am not black, nor I am an oriental. Downtown seems like an expensive place to settle. Any neighborhood that is not too far from the financial district, safe and with plenty of infrastructure (restaurants, shopping area, etc.)

Thanks many again, and I hope you have a happy holidays!

To Anonymous,

I have heard Vancouver is a wonderful city, but based on many people´s advises I chose Toronto. Well, I live in NYC, and they say Toronto is most closely matched to New York in terms of culture, things to do, and of course the proximity. Plus, I am a finance professional, and Toronto being the financial capital of Canada makes it the first choice for people like myself. What do you think? What would you have most about Toronto? Any information would be valuble since I have never been neither to Vancouver nor to Toronto.

Thanks!

Toronto is definitely more NYC. we are more San Fransisco or San Diego. Another financial city that is far less stressful, less expensive and less intense is Calgary, Alberta. Great opportunities there. It is more conservative and ´white´ than Toronto. Vancouver is not the financial town it used to be.

Missunderstanding (in reply to: What's the best place to settle in Toronto)
Odly enough, but this American didn´t ask about differences or similarities between our cities in Canada. Or which city do we recomend.

Question is where in Toronto. Hellouu!
Happy Holidays

Hi there,
I found the university area , around Jarvis & Gerrard st East pretty livable. Some green around Allen gardens ( with a beautiful glass house in victorian style ).In "walking " distance of everything and pretty safe. Lots of drunks and bag ladies around the park area and the back streets though.
Don´t know about the real estate though, you´ll have to check that out yourself.

It depends.... (in reply to: What's the best place to settle in Toronto)
It all depends where are you planning to look for job. If it is downtown, then find the place close to subway. A lot of people that work and live in downtown, do not use their cars, as it is cheaper to take public transportation to work then drive and pay $7-10/day for parking. If you are planning to look for job somewhere in Toronto area and use car on everyday basis, they Mississauga is the best choice.

Came from NYC (in reply to: What's the best place to settle in Toronto)
Hi, I was born and raised in NYC in The Bronx. I came to study in Canada almost 4 years ago. I live in Toronto, I don´t live downtown because it is just as expensive as living in Manhattan. If you would like a nice place, try the Don Mills area. It is safe and the prices range from medium to High. All depends your budget as well and what type of community you would like to live in.

moving to toronto? (in reply to: What's the best place to settle in Toronto)
What´s with all these recommendations to live in certain places based on race? Toronto is an extremely multicultural city and a fabulous place, no matter race!
As for price, yes Mississauga is a good choice - it´s considered the burbs, cheaper and fairly good commuting services, as long as you live on the Lakeshore GO train line - drops you off right in the financial centre!
Two sites to check out are: www.city.toronto.on.ca and www.toronto.com for more information.

Good luck!
