Subject: New to Canada
Hello there,

I am moving to Canada as a skilled worker in a few months. Is there any help offered by the government for people like me? For example assistance in buying a home, financing, financial aid to go back to school. Assistance in finding a job? Any incentives?

Thanks

there are endless Not for Profit organizations out there to help people get settled, locate housing, resume preparation, adaptation type concerns like finding a language community to tie into. In terms of financial assistance, incentives, student grants - no.

Hi Sharon, thank you for a quick reply.
I am moving from US. Any advise you can give me will be great. I was told to bring a driving record because its so difficult to get DL in Canada, insurance record, anything else?

it is not difficult to get a DL- you just exchange it. The problem is transfering your safe driving record. Anything you can do to help verify years of being accident free will help in your efforts to reduce your insurance premiums.

Any examples of they type of work you have done in the US to show a Canadian employer that you are quite capable of walking in to a Canadian environment without missing a beat.

For schooling; if you live in any province for an year then would be eligible for in-state tution like US. Also, there are Govt. student loan programs depending on your financial conditions. In Ontario it is called OSAP.

DC is correct but there would not be anything ´gratis´ towards an adaptive education. I think that is what you were asking about.

Sharon,

You are absolutely correct. There is no "free money". But also that doesn´t mean that he can´t go for higher studies if doesn´t have money. I always encourage everybody to go for that.

Not sure about BC, but in Ontario under OSAP if your financial condition is that bad..have depending spouse then you even can have money that you don´t have to pay.

Social assistance is a last resort - but is available once personal finances are exhausted.

I really think Natka was asking about grants, incentives and opportunity funds immediately upon arrival. Student loans are always a consideration but again - those are a financial obligation taken on by citizen and PR alike.

The programm that I talked is not social assistance, that is under OSAP program in Ontario. I only expect the real needy guys to utilize such funds as last resource without abusing.

Hi D_C, are you talking about the grants under OSAP? But isn´t it only PR and Citizens are allowed to have it?
Like what the thread starter mentioned, he is moving here as a skilled worker, could it mean he has a working visa for now?
IF he is here on a working visa then OSAP is out of the question..if he is here as PR then he may qualify for OSAP but grants are usually given to people who are really needy, no income, no qualifications ie can´t get a decent job part time to support him/herself..see, if he´s acquiring a house, has a car etc etc...that all comes up to asset and may be applied against his request for OSAP or grant.. am I right?

To clarify:I will be moving as a skilled worker, but also as a permanent resident. So by getting there I have no house, no job landed(at this time).
That is why I thought I can get some assistance. Finding a house to buy vs renting, but without credit history established, I would need some assistance. I have double major, so if I got incentive I would go back for masters, etc.
How is the housing market by the way? Reading the news it seems to be slowing down, and properties are decreasing in price. Although talking to residents there, they are not noticing the shift?
Thanks everyone!!
