I received my PR and am planning to come to Canada sometime in the new yeear. I have been to Vancouver with my family and fell in love with that city. My concern is that I am black, from Africa, and had not met many black people in Vancouver during my trip.
Should I be concerned about what area of Vancouver to live in, to find work (I hold a graduate degree from the US), and what school to send my young children without worrying that they be picked on because of the color of their skin.
I have heard that Canada is a tolerant society, but having lived in the US, you can´t help thinking about these issues.
Thanks for any candid advice.

(in reply to: Settling in Vancouver) Toronto has a very large black community,(Haitian, Jamaica etc) however I would encourage you to settle where you like the climate, there are work opportunities and you like the city itself. Canada is very multi-coloured. Your children might be the old black child in a class but for sure not the only ´non white´. My niece is the only white child in a class of 30 students. Maybe that helps you.

(in reply to: Settling in Vancouver) sorry, in reference to the above posting- I am reporting from Vancouver. You would be surprised how many black people there are in Vancouver-especially during World Cup Soccer.

vancouver (in reply to: Settling in Vancouver) Hello
I visited Vancouver for the first time last summer. What a joy. The people are welcoming and tolerant. Very unlike the U.S. I live in Orlando now, and I think Vancouver is very different, and we have a lot of Black people in Orlando.
I did see pockets of Black people in Vancouver, but mostly Asian. Have you done a demographic search?
Without a doubt, we are moving to Vancouver.

(in reply to: Settling in Vancouver) Ralph,
I am also from Africa and thinking of moving to Vancouver. I live in Florida and always thought of raising a family in Canada. I picked Vancouver because of the weather and all the goods things I heard of the city. Maybe we will meet there. I am a civil engineer and i´m currently talking with few companies. Looks like the market is not that bad in that sector.
