Vancouver and the rest of the country has been watching hell every night for the past year on TV or reading newspaper articles with warnings in the opening paragraph.

A man by the name of Willie Pickton was accused of killing 26 women from the most desolate and shameful places - the Vancouver´s downtown eastside. All the dead women were sex trade workers.

The court decided to try the first 6 murders as a separate trial for endless reasons. The day the trial started, every news station from across North America was on hand hoping to get some sort of juicy detail to sell newspapers.

It was quickly discovered that the US and Canadian court systems are very different. Cameras were not allowed in the court room, lawyers were not flamboyant and dramatic and the jury members would never be named or available for the late night talk show circuit at the end of the trial. Lawyers will never appear on Larry King and we won´t remember their names by next week. No book deals for this bunch - just the thanks of the public for a job well done. 3 days in to the trial the international media packed up their cameras and went home - Canadian justice was boring- just like our politics.

With much less fanfare than the first day of the trial - a verdict was handed down today. 10 months of testimony and envidence has resulted in 6 convictions of second degree murder. The only thing the jury could not prove beyond a reasonable doubt was pre-meditation.

All that is left is sentencing and we are all hoping for 6 concurrent life sentences so this man never sees daylight again. The judge has taken the unusual step of asking the jury for their sentencing recommendations.

So... tomorrow morning these faithful citizens will go back to their jobs and families, the country will say thank you, nobody will be on Entertainment Tonight and we will all do our best to make sure this nightmare never happens again - to anyone. It is the Canadian way of doing things.

Today, I am very proud of my country and the way we do things and I will defend what we stand for with anyone, any time. We may not get it right all the time but today was a very good day.

yeah, that´s right, nice one Anonymous..you just showed the rest of us Canadians how "the U.S." is better har har har!!!...

BTW: nice read sharon!
justice served..
now i hope they change the punishment for teens or young adults who commit crimes REPEATEDLY...juvenile detention does not work nor does house arrest and especially taking it for granted in hopes that they will grow old out of it...if they know what they did and the capacity of doing it and the degree of harm to another being..they should be tried in court and be given harsher judgement/punishment..

teen crimes´ taking over our streets with more gangs and more violence with it..it´s all over the news, innocent victims being stabbed for no reason, mobbing, drive by shooting, bag snatchers, robbers...etc.etc..

they should get punished!
it shouldn´t be a slap in the wrist.
it should be Slap their faces..

again,just my own 2cents :)

sometimes I feel like our Canadian sense of bleeding heart gets a little carried away.

I deal with repeat offenders in my job. it is astonishing the damage that one drug addicted kid can do just to maintain a habit. Rather than put him in jail I would prefer to give him a choice... jail or mandatory treatment - no other options.

but I digress.

An unassuming, yet fair and and honest system to be proud of, for sure. Pickton crimes quite a tragic event for Vancouver, and coming to a just close.

The big news here in Chicago is Conrad Black´s prison sentencing to occur tomorrow in Chicago´s federal court. The Northern Illinois District Attorney has asked for 19-25 years in prison. He has shown no remorse over corruption during ownership of Canadian newspapers and the Chicago Sun-Times. Sentencing will include other Canadian Hollinger International executives involved in the scheme.

What´s happened was a shame. The Sun-Times has a proud tradition in Chicago newspaper history. Much of it´s assets were sold and the paper forced to assume large debts to finance Lord Black´s lavish lifestyle. Justice here to be served as well.

Most of the Canadian Press sent here did not report nor take much interest in what happened to the Sun-Times. Some here saw the Canadian press as almost taking a sympethic view of Mr. Black´s defense arguments.

But justice does prevail.

to us common folk, Conrad Black is swine. He gave up his Canadian citizenship to become an elitist member of the House of Lords. Now he wants Canada to protect him. He oozes slime.
