Subject: PR CARD
hello, i recently relocated to a dif province and wanted to replace my drivers license, i contacted the icbc and they told me i need to show them a pr card,
my pr card is not valid - i have not renew it because i understood that it is only required if i cross the border.
does anyone know what thats mean? do i need to apply for a renewal of the pr in order to receive a drivers license?

your permanent residency card has an expiry date - you need to renew it. Crossing the border has no influence on this requirement.

cic web site says:
"If you are a permanent resident and thinking of traveling outside Canada, you need a valid permanent resident card to return to Canada....Check the expiry date on your card and apply for a new one at least 3 months before you travel"

it doesn´t say anywhere that i have to renew before it expires, it only says i have to renew if im thinking of traveling..

I don´t think that she must have to renew the PR card just for the DL exchange purpose. They weanted to see this as a proof of her legal PR status. Now, by any way expired PR card necessasily means that she already lost her PR ship. She can be still be a valid PR, just her card is not renewed. If she applies for renewal and it´ll take few months to get it back, in the mean time she can´t have the new DL meaning can´t drive legally. It sounds too cruel.

So, I think Julie, you are correct, renewal is only must if you travel OUTSIDE of Canada, nothing to do with inter province travel or move.

Oh o,

Little correction,

Should be, "Now, by NO way expired PR card necessasily means that she already lost her PR ship."

this is what i thought too, i read in the gov web-site i need to renew only if i travel, so i figured if i don´t need the card, i prefer to wait the extra time till i became a citizen.

but now they are asking for it - so i cant keep driving with my regular drivers license - since it is only allowed for 90 days which have already passed - and i have to take the time until receiving a new pr.. this is crazy

isn´t there any other way to prove pr status?

Did they spefically ask you to renew the card? If not then I would simply go to them with the expired one and explain the fact if they ask to renew it.

My PR card expires in May 2008.I heard that renewal process can take upto 8weeks. Can I apply in March or April, so that I can use it in June? I can´t find the answer anywhere. Any help is appreciated.
