Subject: Driving License in Calgary-Alberta
I am new PR in Calgary. I have been middle east driver license and am driving for more than 10 years in Doha, Qatar.
I also have UK driver license, which is valid until year 2024.

Could some one help me by providing the following:
Can I start driving by exchanging Qatari and/or UK driver license without any delay.
If there is some way forward, what is the best way to start driver´s license in Calgary.

I shall appreciate feedback from all

You may exchange your UK license for an Alberta class 5. (regular vehicle license)

A valid licence from Austria, Belgium, Germany, Japan, South Korea, Switzerland and the United Kingdom (excluding Northern Ireland) can be exchanged for a Class 5 when the applicant is presenting a valid licence of equivalent class.

You can find out more information here:

It?s a total disaster and haressment to New Immigrants in Alberta by Service Alberta in Calgary. It?s a survival test for New Immigrants to Alberta in the severe winter.

They issue a GDL Learner?s license after the knowledge test. You cannot drive without a Class 5 driver sitting besides you.
Even though I have a licence wayback since 1989 from India, they asked for approval/authentication from Consulate Gen. of India or wait for 1 year for Class 5 Road Test.
There is only one guy approving this in the Special investigating Unit & He doesn´t even reply to to your calls or return your calls.

This is crazy.

Severe winter in Calgary? You gotta be kidding!!lol

You have to try to go to Fort McMurray and see how cold it gets up here, the weather here makes Calgary looks like the Mexican Riviera.

One thing you are missing in your comment though is that you will get a class 7 GDL but you are allowed to apply for a class 5 right away if you wish, all you have to do is a road test and done deal.

Most people have to hold a class 7 license for 2 years in this province but if you can probe that you had a valid driver license from another country you are excempt of the two year requirement (class 7 GDL).

Good luck.

Some Calgary residents used to tell me that Toronto is like Florida to them. I wish them visiting Ft. Mcmurray:).

I don´t know the detail procedure of AB; but it seems to me that DL regulations are too stringent in Canada which probably acts in the reverse way.

Read an puzzling findings here:
http://www.wheels.ca/article/47627

In short, collision rates are higher among those taking rookie driver education programs.

Everybody must wish and deserve safe streets; I´m also nothing different.

Question is how? Or what´s the most effective way?

That article that I posted clearly tells that current stringent procedure in ON is backfiring. If you squeeze orange more and more for juice then it gets bitter?

ah ah ah ah. What a "falks you are Sharon" this is your favourite non-professional word Sharon, you are using in this forum which suits you.
Of course the Canadian streets are Sharon´s streets, the forum is his own forum, and maybe in his mind we Canadians are his own people. I don´t want to believe it.
