Subject: The six month visit question |

I (US) have been visiting my now common-law (CA) wife for over the past year. I would come and stay for a few months, leave for a while and return. Over the summer she and I were out of the country for two months.
After much research, a few immigration attorneys have stated that I may leave and reenter so that I can work in the US while we wait approval in principal.
When entering Canada, the agents would never stamp my passport so I had no basis for timing six months except my memory of the entries.
Upon entering the country a few days ago, we were threatend with me not being able to enter because they claimed I was living illegally in the country. In the end, they issued me a three month vistor visa and told me even after I files for PR, I still had to renew the visa over and over.
Are the border guys correct that I can only stay in the country for six months out of any given 12 month period?

(in reply to: The six month visit question) Looks like you are an American visiting Canada.
I know the opposite is correct like you said; Canadians can " only stay in the country for six months out of any given 12 month period" - without any privelege for work.
