Raj I assume nobody kills anyone in India?

Hey 2007 year in Toronto has been a messy one to say the least but suburb are suburbs. More shootings and killings then ever before but since you know that there are only three difficult areas you should stay out of them, correct?

Suburbs in Toronto are huge and some small pockets within them are bad so stay out of them Raj.

Roy,
What was your first sentence about ? Not sure why you took that so offensively, but you need to lighten up and lose some sarcasm.

I have heard about the suburbs being bad, but usually some are better than others areas, and since I had no idea I was hoping to get some feedback from Canadians, thanks for your inputs, and I apologize if that link offended you.

Raj,

I think Roy was just making a point that crime exists everywhere to various degrees and no point in singling out this issue. Canada in general is very safe.

I´m from Chicago, and Toronto is like a version of Disneyland compared to certain parts of my city. So this should not be a prime concern here in my opinion.

You can learn more and get a feel for the Toronto when you arrive.

Richard,
What I have observed is that usually the big city areas are not crime free, agreed, but the suburbs are generally better. Also if one has lived in the Toronto area they must have a pretty good idea about the good better and best neighborhoods among the suburbs, so I don´t see any harm in letting others know what they think, its just more information available for future immigrants. It does not matter where you reside, there will always be a disparity among your local neighborhoods. If you ask me, its a fairly straightforward question and I was expecting fellow members to name a few places instead of very generic comments.

By the way, Richard, how long have you been living in the Toronto area ?

Raj,

You make a good point with interesting observations. And yes, there is no harm is asking where the better areas of Toronto might be.

I don´t live in Toronto currently, but have visited a few times. I was always impressed with how clean, organized, and safe all parts of that city and suburbs appeared to me. It is one of my top destinations to visit in the Spring when we´ll finally decide where to locate and make our move to Canada. The other possibility being Ottawa.

I think you´ll be equally impressed. Among the negatives, as I´m sure you´re aware, is extremely high housing costs. From my perspective, though, the cost of living in all of Canada is high, especially for those of us coming from the U.S.

You may want to frame the question with asking where the better suburbs of Toronto are. Quality of life such as lower crime rate will automatically follow with the responses. I think there´s a sensitivity with locals everywhere with newcomers asking more about positive aspects rather than the negative. It´s all part of international relations and diplomacy :-).

ya... posting a newspaper articles about shootings is not the friendliest way to ask.

to be honest, I would avoid Toronto for the moment. Far too many immigrants choosing Toronto and competing for the same jobs and housing. Not only that, the slow down in the economy (due to the high dollar) will be most felt in Ontario.

Unless you have family or friends there that are willing to help you get settled and working, I would consider other cities first.

and yes, there are some rougher neighbourhoods that are worth avoiding but those are the ones with the cheap rent.

Point taken ! Thanks Richard and Sharon.

There is a possibility that I might be in a slightly different situation. I may be working for my current US based employer for a while, but residing in Canada, not sure how things are going to work out, but its one of the better scenarios for me at the moment, atleast thats what I think. Having said that I am still hoping to find a good neighborhood near the big cities, and Toronto is closer to where I live now. If I can work things out with my employer, I will not have to worry about job and even high rent/mortgage :)
So I´m just feeling out everything at this moment in the inquiry mode, so that I can have some knowledge base.

Raj,

To asnwer your question ditectly; some of my choices:

Pickering, Ajax, Oshawa at the east side.

Newmarket area in the north side.

You also may consider Brampton/Missisauga area, though lots of immigrants there too, but better than Toronto.

These areas are way safer, cleaner and real estate price/rent are still cheaper than Toronto.

If you are not in a position that you have to settle in Toronto then I would follow Sharon´s advice. Avoid Toronto if you can.

It looks like you would like to stay closer to USA (Detroit?), if that´s the case then may consider Windsor or London.

Raj I was not offended but if you would have written something without just the link it would of spoken volumes. The title did ruffle my feathers a little.

There is not a residential area in Toronto that any citizen of Toronto would not feel safe walking at night. If I would of replied the safest suburbs are the ones with the most money and the richest houses or I would of claimed the suburb I live in but then would of gotten really attacked.

Compared to US cities were virtually no one ever wals I don´t think GTA people have lost the streets like some suburban people in certain cities south of the border.
