Subject: work experience
Hello. I really want to move to Canada right out of college in a few years, as I have a very good friend in Ottawa that I want to roommate with. In a few years from now, however I am unsure if I have a chance due to lack of official work experience. I have never had a full-time job and I have a part-time job at a YMCA.

My profession that I plan on going in to as a career, video game development (more of the art side of it), is on the NOC list under skill type 5, skill level B. The issue is, I´ve never had any "official" work experience, but I´ve had years of "unofficial" work experience by volunteering as an independant developer on free-to-play "mods". With a unique career such as this, how is this figured out? It doesn´t count as work experience, does it?

If not, is there a way a guy with no or little work experience to still have a shot at getting into Canada? I want to get in ASAP but I am unsure if I hace a chance at being accepted. Also is there anything my very close Canadian friends can do to help my chances?

Thanks much.

Officially, you need minimum 1 year full-time paid verifiable work experience to qualify under the skilled worker program. Recommed getting that under your belt first before applying.

Only other option is getting a job offer from a Canadian company and living there temporarily under the work permit program.

Is there anywhere I can find out more about plan B? How does that work? I apply for a job, and if I get accepted they can get me into Canada? More info on that would be great, if anyone can, thanks.

Yes, if you get a job offer from a Canadian company, you can apply for and get a temporary work permit. Then, you can apply for permanent residence in Canada while working in Canada.

I believe, though, that you´d still need that one full year of paid experience completed before you could apply. But I think a company would be happy to have you on board for a year with your computer development skills. It´s worth to try.

Maybe Roy or others may have additional suggestions.
