Subject: PR residency question
hi guys, a question: if an american citizen who holds canadian PR were to move temporarily (a few months after they receive the canadian PR) with their canadian citizen spouse to america for a year and then return to canada, would those days spent with a canadian citizen outside of canadian count for PR residency? i remember reading something along the lines of this somewhere, but could not confirm it. it sounds too "easy" for it to be right.

thanks so much in advance.

I think residency means being within Canadian borders. Being in the USA does not count towards residency. Perhaps, there may be exceptions for those working for Canadian government or companies outside Canada.

To maintain PR, one must be within Canada for 2 out of 5 years in any 5-year period.
For citienship, that must be 3 out of 4 years.

It is really TOO EASY.

If you stay outside of Canada (no matter USA or other side of the world) WITH YOUR CANADIAN CITIZEN SPOUSE then those days will be counted for PR. However, will not be counted for Citizenship.
