I just suggest him to look for jobs there; as that place seems to have tons of jobs good enough to support many many stupid immigrants who are languishing in Toronto/Vancouver/Montreal.

That´s it.

Thanks all for responding my questions.

It is interesting to know about those things before making a move. I have applied for a job in Calgary so that is why I asked though I don´t expect to get it I thought that could be our destination. However we are still thinking.

For my geophysics/physics background Vancouver could do too. We just have to wait and see ... with no job secured we could move anywhere really.

We did not like the idea about going where "everyone goes" so Toronto is out for now ... anyway we are still debating and this forum is helping a lot.

Fort McMurry really does not appeal to me. I checked some info on it and I feel someone has to be brave to live there.

By the way, what are the provinces in Canada where you don´t have to wait 3 months for medical insurance ? that is going to be a key point for us so I can start eliminating places.

I think Richard gave us a list of the provinces with the waiver but I can´t find the post anymore. Any website on this ?
Thanks again.

Hi CBV333,

Calgary is a very nice and clean city and its economy is getting better and better... beautiful place.

Fort Mc, is a very interesting place. Wages are usually higher that the rest of the province, lots of industry in your field, however housing is very expensive and we have a weather system way different than Calgary.

Last two weeks have been miserable weather wise, hopefully will have an early spring this year but you just never know.

I wish you well in your endevour.

Welcome to Alberta eh!

Cheers

mining and gas exploration is booming in BC too. Have a look at Kelowna. I dream about living there!

I must confess I have no idea what jobs are tied to geophysics... sorry CBV.

CBV,
The provinces without the 3 month wait for health coverage are the Maritime and the Prairie provinces: Manitoba, Saskathewan, PEI, New Brunswick, New Foundland, Nova Scotia.

Bill,
What do you do for outdoor activity there? Is there any place to go or see?

thanks all for your comments and response.

I am getting totally confused now on where to go, if not decided by the job ... anyway I keep researching, now I thought at least Alberta has no 3 months wait so I will have to start digging cheap medical insurance and look for way to get cheap car insurance also ... can´t go to Canada before studying all of these, need to do some more homework.

Anyway I don´t know when my PPR will come I have started counting down and on Wednesday it will be exactly 6 months before my Meds expire. Hopefully I will be able to stay in the US, that is another concern.

Thanks all

CBV,

As far as I can see; Alberta/BC should be your top choice according to your profession. What I listen about AB or BC here they should hire you gladly right away as your field is very close to the oil/gas industry.

In Toronto area there are lots of Geotechnical companies (basically civil engg.) who may hire geophysicists (I see some geologist ultimately swicthed as Geotechnical Engineer). However, depending on your expectation level, starting salary wouldn´t be that interesting as they don´t really need a PhD for the positions, and infact most likely they won´t hire you with a Ph.D. Just an option if don´t find any better option.

You may check the following site to have some idea: http://www.amec.com/

Though I sincerely hope that you would end up in your original track and what you deserve.

Hi Richard,

For outdoor activity I fly giant scale radio control airplanes. We have a nice rc airfield here and I also love fishing!. We have a few nice lakes around here.

Sharon:

Guess what?
I think I am moving to Kelowna BC. I am getting to the point where I don´t need to have my office here and per haps I am moving this up coming spring.
I might have to fly to Fort Mc once and awhile though.

That area is GORGEOUS and my spider senses are telling that there is a booming coming up in beautiful BC pretty soon.

Cheers
Bill

Correction for CBV. Alberta also does not require a 3 month wait for health care. But those coming from other provinces must wait 3 months:

http://www.health.gov.ab.ca/ahcip/ahcip_moving.html

By the way, for any one interested or may know this. There´s a huge debate on proposed universal health care plans going on down in the States within the Democratic Party.

The Clinton plan would mandate that everyone must buy health insurance. Obama´s plan would make it optional. But both plans would finally make health care affordable for the entire population.

The Clinton team is faulting Obama for not mandating health care. I´m trying to remember how Canada´s system compares in this respect. I don´t believe Canada or any province forces or mandates Canadians or PRs to sign up for government health care. Am I correct?

thanks DC for your post

As usual you are always helping me I will check out those website.

Yes AB and BC are my first choices and it is also good for my spouse so it has been two weeks we are debating about Vancouver or Calgary though smaller towns would work fine.

But overall I don´t have expectations and as I said before I have an open mind and whatever comes will be good.(whatever does not include PPR after medicals expire, that won´t be good)

Anyway I keep digging information while waiting for PPR, I guess this is the best thing to do.
