Subject: landing need advise
I recieved my visa which allows me to land in Canada. I had to travel to Africa for some personal business so I will be going straight to canada from Nigeria landing in Montreal then going to Ottawa (No direct flight to ottawa from Nigeria).
1. Can you tell me if this will be a problem? (my daughter sponsored me)
2. How much do I need to take with me into Canada? What monetary form should I take
it with?

as long as your ticket shows your connecting flights to your daughter, you should be OK.

as a sponsored parent you are not required to bring financial resouces to satisfy immigration. however you will need cash to get yourself through airports, buy yourself some lunch and perhaps make some phone calls or take a taxi. If there is a problem with weather in Montreal you may be stuck there for some reason...

I would suggest you have $2-300 in canadian cash or travellers cheques in your pocket for sundries or an emergency. If you bring US funds there should be a currency converter at the airport. I would also try and cash some of your travellers cheques at the airport if that is the route you go.

hope I have answered what you were really asking!

I am not sure about that Sharon, I think he can land in any province except Quebec.
He has to clear Customs and Immigration in the first POE regardless what the connection flight is.

Dear In need:

I would contact the Canadian Embassy and ask them if you can "land" in Quebec.

I actually think it is the other way around. If you have Quebec selection they want to insure you are actually ending up in the province that gave you ´preferred treatment´.

The general CIC programs do not stipulate where you must land. In this situation, our friend has a transportation dilemma. There is no direct flight into Ottawa. What should he do instead? Pick a different airline that avoids Montreal?

If that was the case, I think it would be very clearly stated on the CIC website.

This is what I found online:

You may land at any port of entry of your discretion across Canada. However, if your stated intended destination was not within Quebec, landing in that province without a Certificat du Selection Quebec may be denied. According to the Canadian immigration law Quebec possesses its own selection criteria. Therefore, if you have not passed assessment under Quebec selection and attempt to land in Quebec, you may experience delays in the landing procedure, or refusal to perform the landing procedure in the absence of a Certificat du Selection Quebec.

Just a thought

I believe you are correct Bill.

Though I know some families who landed through Quebec without the selection certificate without any special delay.
