you were to have brought at least $10,000 with you for settlement purposes - what has happened to it?

you will need to use up all of your own money first before the government assists and even then - nothing much more than about $600 a month.

It is not unrealistic for it to take a few months to get settled and employed.

The Government of Canada does not provide financial support to new skilled worker immigrants.

You must show that you have enough money to support yourself and your dependants after you arrive in Canada. You cannot borrow this money from another person. You must be able to use this money to support the costs of living for your family.

You will need to provide proof of your funds to the Canadian visa office in your home country when you submit your application for immigration.

The amount of money you need to support your family is determined by the size of your family. These amounts are updated every year.

Good luck!

You are supposed to have at least 6 months worth of living expense with you for this situations.

One month is nothing, many thousand new immigrants have been struggling for many years...

Don´t rely on any free money, try to be on your own. Look agressively for work, communicate within your own community. Don´t just rely on online/newspaper ad.

Good Luck.

What kind of job are you searching for ? At this moment u would be better off to take whatever is available to you to stem the bleed. Does your profession need licensing ? If yes then start planning towards it, and as dc said, don´t expect the government to bail you out.

"What should i do ?"

Find A job. If you are desperate for cash, go flipping burgers, driving a cab, etc.

You are a skilled WORKER, so start WORKING. You had 10 000$ with you! That should have lasted you untill you found a job!

I hope you find a job ASAP... I think you are very brave to post your question as most people will just get so upset when reading it... you know... I am sure the last thing Canada wants is landing immigrants asking for money...
I know it must be difficult but as you may have read, for many people it is at the beginning... keep trying, do not give up, there is a chance for you out there, you have been given an oportunity that many of us continue to pray for...do not waste it!
Good Luck!

Lily,

In general I´m deeply upset about the hardles professional immigrants facing in Canada. I;m and immigrant, was in Canada for some years and I witnesed all, studied a little bit also.

However, if someone after just 1 month started looking for social assistance then I wouldn´t be very sympathetic on him.

For any new immigrant, specially for the ones in the Vancouver/BC area there is a good site prepared by an immigrant lady.

There are lot to learn from there, about how to prepare/upgrade yourself for Canada, how to proceed to the job market, specially how to control personal stress...which are not very easy to find.

I would recommend everybody to read this:

for all those who do not think settlement funds is necessary - now you know why.

I cannot imagine myself moving to another part of the world, getting settled and turing a paycheque all within 30 days. I would have barely found the bus stops and the drug store. Job interviews for positions of any calibre can take weeks to complete and pay cheques are 2 weeks after that - at the earliest. That is assuming you land the first job you apply for.

That´s real life in Canada or any other western country.

That is why you come with money in your pocket. That is why we get so furious when people want to borrow their settlement money from uncle joe or use their credit card to convince CIC that they have sufficent funds to settle.

You end up with problems like our friend.
