Subject: Im planning to marry an american......
Im wondering if i marry an american will he get a PR card once he arrives in canada, ontario? can we marry(e.g. sign papers when apart) and hes in america but plans to come here and live here? Or do we both have to be here for proper marriage? Does it even matter?

If you are a Canadian citizen, you can get married and sponsor him. I got the impression from this forum that it takes lesser time when your husband stays outside Canada as far as sponsorship is concerned.

I don´t think he can get a PR when he just arrives in ontario, but if he is an american citizen then he can probably stay in Canada for sometime right ?

Correct Raj.

He can´t expect PR status just on arrival, has to go through the usual spousal sponsorship.

If he stays outside and appled then it should take less time.

As an American he can enter into Canada any time, though if the sponsorship process continues then sometimes it may create problem as img. officer may interpret dual intent of the visit. Though I think it would be very rare.

In believe you can marry him in Canada.

BUT, to be able him do have his PR, you must have to sponsor him or he has to apply in Skilled worker class (if elligible).

He can´t have the PR status just becasue of the marriage. After the marriage you have to sponsor him as your married spouse and that will take some times.

Can´t tell the most recent. I believe if he is in the US it should be around 12-15 months.

Roy or Sharon may provide more accurate.

welcome to the real world of international relationships. Departed Canada is correct.

There is a full legal process that must be done inorder for your American partner to legally live with you in Canada. True in reverse as well.

You will need to be approved as a sponsor first, and then your partner is approved. Takes some time, and cash.

no way around it.

WILL SPONSORING A SPOUSE OTHER THAN COMMON-LAW SPEED THE PROCESS?
