Better in the sense of do it correctly that may save time & future problems, and if you have any special situation.

Nothign special to the CIC, using lawyer or do it yourself..the same.

I am so shocked when I see this time and again. If your sponsoring your parents or your spouse you can save money by doing it yourself. You can also end a relationship by making mistakes.

It depends if your parents or partner is not worth the fee then go it alone. Sometimes money spent on a quality representative is the best money spent. Departed Canadian likes to point out there is a negative side to Immigration like everything else in life.

This is a huge decision and the answer is in your heart not your wallet.

What ever you do get plenty of references before you pay anyone.

The original poster (Nick) and I are on the same page in thinking looks like.

The original question wasn´t anything related with any positve/negative issue. So no point of creating any new mess with any imaginary issue. Nick asked a general question without any detail. Answer could be in both wayss I also gave my suggestion accordingly. Though just tried to say that attorney doesn´t warrant any expedite service which some folks believe.

I´m not aganist hiring immigration consultant/attorneys. Definitely they have the utilities; in some cases like refugee it may be require to hire them like a must. However, CIC made the immigration forms very easy with nice explanatory guides. In general, without any special situation most of the people with basic English/French can do the process by themselves. That all I tried to tell him in short.

Though it is a good suggestion; "What ever you do get plenty of references before you pay anyone".

There are lots of fake/inefficient consultants around.

Nick,
for your own good and safety, do not hire an Immigration Consultant. Hire a real lawyer and they are some good ones around.
The Canadian Govt. has a very low opinion of Immigration Consultants.
A lawyer is the way to go Nick or just do it on your own and save money. People like DC here can guide you along.

PT, I thought you were interested in becoming an immigration consultant - or so you said the other day in one of your posts. Why would you aspire to become something you encourage Nick to avoid.

I still have an interest in Immigration but I have not made up my mind as yet.
I have a Masters in Political Science and now dabbling with the MCSE/CISCO. I am also thinking about a Phd in Political Science.

Before coming to Canada I did not know the difference between Immigration Consulatnts and Immigration lawyers but I did my research and mix with a lot of people and from what I am hearing, Immigration Consultants are not to be trusted. Lawyers are more qualified, the courts and the Govt. recognised them, everybody respect lawyers.
Being a lawyer is prestigious like a doctor.
Anyone can do a 6 months course and become an Immigration Consultant.
I see some taxi drivers and waiters in restaurants here in Toronto giving out cards as CSIC members, that is they are Immigration Consultants.
Hey, they might be some good consultants but give me a lawyer any day.

you realize that most lawyers have little or no immigration training. It is a dreadful mistake to walk in to a law office and assume they know what to do with an immigration application.

in fact, disaster.

I browse the whole Internet, check book publishers, and more, only lawyers are giving seminars and writing books. all the feceral court cases are done by lawyers.
what are immigration consultants doing?
when you get problems with a consultant, only a lawyer can save you, so you might as well deal with a lawyer from the beginning.
lawyers are not stupid people. I admire some immigration lawyers like Waldman, Mr. Cohen, Mendel Green.
I understand there are specialist immigration lawyers.
How can you compare a consultant with a lawyer?
It is like comparing a pharamcist with a doctor?
or a plumber with an engineer.

an Immigration consultant cannot even enter the court, that is if he is allowed to pass the door.
I read the newspapers everyday how consultants are ripping off people. I never see that with lawyers.
