Job market - contract vs. perm.

Subject: Job market - contract vs. perm.
Question about employment situation in Canada.

For those residents/citizens who know the professional job market (IT, engineering, etc.), are contract positions becoming as prevelant as permanent? I ask because in the States, permanant is often still preferred due to valuable employer benefits, especially health care, that the governemnt does not provide.

But as we know in Canada, health coverage is universally provided, so I´m guessing it´s probably not as much of a concern.

But in any event, are contract vs. perm. positions on par, or does one outweigh the other in demand, preference, or availability? Is there a trend?

No one on this? Ok, then back to the favorite soap opera here of who´s using who´s IP address and deleting who´s posts. I thought this was a serious forum.

on the one site I just looked at there are significant numbers of permanent positions compared to contract.

Many companies do offer what we consider extended health benefits that go beyond the universal coverage - such as dental, perscriptions, glasses, physio etc.

this may prove interesting

If you are working for a set term, the specific agreement would cover statatory deductions.

If you are hired as a contractor, then the above link starts to play an important role. if it walks like an employee, and acts like an employee... it is likely an employee!

Richard, are you are in the tech sector? what is your area of expertise?

my guy is a Java guru and I am currently poking around at what might be available for him in the Vancouver area. I would be happy to keep my eyes open for you.

sorry for my ignorance... was s.o. to represent something. I am not very good with all the job discriptions.

if you are interested and want to register over at Road to Canada, I can send you an email and we could take the job discussion off the board.

as can well imagine, I am not comfortable posting my email here.

Congrats Richard on getting contacted about jobs. What a positive and encouraging first step! We´ve also noticed quite a number of 1 year type contract jobs, and have wondered if that´s a common way for an employer to "test" a new employee out without obligation.

You are absolutely correct that it seems a much risker move in the US to accept a short term or contract position on the grounds of health insurance alone. I am excited about the prospect of actually having health coverage at all if I go back into business for myself one day. It would be one less major concern for sure. Keep us updated on the job situation!

I work for a small NPO. any medical issues not covered under our general plan are picked up under a Health and Welfare Trust.

the organization puts X amount into a trust that I draw from for any medical expense not covered with our universal care. It is part of my contract. The advantage of doing this is that the money set aside for me is not factored into my income and I therefore do not pay any income tax on those dollars. So my the applicable medical expenses are paid with pre-tax dollars. While it is not free, it saves me about 35%.
