Hi, sorry to hear that. If you landed as a skilled worker; you won´t get anything ( you suppose to bring 10000 CAD).No matter ( in most cases)where from you get your degree you still need to do some studies. Besides that Marketing related studies does not have good market in Canada. I studied myself in Marketing (Finnish degree)and it sucks even in Finland. Now I am working in Accounting field. Anyway, Good luck.

I am sure you are black or brown, right? Well this is Canada, welcome to the reality which noone can understand until they spend all their money and have nothing even to go back!!!Just another question, how come most star bucks, small service industry workers, or security workers, somehow 99 percent Indian, or Asian?

So patience my friend, after having spent 10 years here, and doing your PhD you may get a job that is similar to the job of a white guy with a BA with no experience, (Remember I said you MAy...)No one can understand your feelings unless he is a dark or brown immigrant...sorry being a bit racist or pesssimist today... God bless you ..Never forget there are real canadians here, born here, thousands of years ago and their children suffer as well without schools, clothes, and you never see them in media, just get in your car (if you have one) travel around this beautiful country and see those first nations kids, being ignored, an living in shit...But we have beautiful churches right ? about 10.000? and more than 3000 homeless? mmm having an empty church at night but letting homeless people sleep in the streets. We are Canadian, right?

Lomina, I guess you are right. I live in Finland and here Finns don´t want to give a position where you need to deal with customer/outsiders. I studied in Marketing ( it was totally granted from Finnish University) and guess what?? I ccould not find any jobs ( not even feed back for the refusal) in Five years from the date of graduation. I did some accounting course and finallu got a job ( not so easily). I was an apprentice for 6 months. I got this job permanently after putting my ass in fire for 2 years. This a international company...who sing "we´r international" by giving job only WHITE people...that´s the truth.

So, I am sure Canada could not be worse than Finland.Beware Toronto:: you would not find those odd jobs in Finland.Be optimist and patient and do some studies ...YOU WILL FIND A NICE JOB ...at least Canadians know how does the curry taste.

Welfare will not be available to you until you have exhausted all your resources and the amount they give you is so small, you will not be impressed.

About your job hunting...

as you know, marketing and business admin is extremely cultural and geographically sensitive. The chance of landing a marketing job off the top may be optimistic. Instead concentrate on getting that cash flow going.

You may need to consider a junior position until you can prove that you understand the Canadian market. This is not a racial issue, this is an appropriate skill and relevant experience issue.

How´s your english? if you can´t speak articulately to a client, how can you be helpful to an employer? Marketing is extremely client focused and there is no room to ease in to the position. There is also no room for trial and error.

You will get your marketing job, but you may need to take some interim steps to get there - just like I would have to do if I was arriving in your country with similar skills.

Yes for sure guys, Canada needs dishwashers, cleaners, factory workers, security guards, or some skilled people like plummers, welders etc , Everyday in Toronto i see examples of families who migrate from Asia and Africa doing all labor jobs for survival . just to meet expenses , they have growing kids and they have to work to survive, Yes I have to think about career change, I don´t know what i should do, I am thinking of Master´s degree in foreign trade, I am not sure if i will get a decent job after doing this course

Beware Toronto, I still think you´r choosing the wrong subject (Of course it´s your decision). I guess you have done some studies in accounting; why not getting more courses on that and at least you will get Accounts payable/ receivable jobs. If you think for long term...get a CGA/CMA ( Certified general accountant/ Management accountant) and for sure you will get some compensation from your previous studies. You may think why would take those lengthy course and my point is you are gonna live in CANADA ..so why not? Beside that those stydent (CGA/CMA) get a good job. Even when you just start this course you will some companies who need the beginners.I know this cause I already search for this profession and gathered the informations for my future establishment in Canada. If you are interested here is link: http://www.thinkcga.org/. Good luck

There are hundreds of jobs in Toronto, my friends. Do not get disaapointed, just try to learn how to land a job. Sending resume s will not help. Pick a survival job to make your living and dedicate few hours volunteering the organization you want to work for, do some networking, build relations with seniors while voluteering and get a chance for an interview. If you could qualify an interview, you will get the job whether you are black, white or brown. But if yoyu are not qualified for something, i am sorry, you can take pitty on yourself but it is not going to help. Be realistic and fight for your rights, find a way to land a job, do not be aprt of routine hunters with no success, be innovative and creative, my friends. Good Luch ehh

Welfare to immigrants (in reply to: When can skilled worker immigrant go on welfare)
I am an immigrant from India and landed canada in the month of may 2009 under skilled category My daughter was a brilliant student in India Though she has got admission in york university But none of us has got any job so far in almost 6 months in Canada.I was post graduate in commerce, also did diploma in personnel management and industrial relations,C.A.I.I.B from Indian Institute of Bankers(India)and a Softron Tax Course LEVEL-1 FROM Canada and having 30 years of banking experience in managerial capacity and I also did inspection/audit of the branches But not getting any job, From where should I bring canadian experience if I am not hired. My wife is also graduate and B-ed. If the govt can not provide us a job why they call us in skilled category. The whole money I brought from India will be exhausted in few days and I am worried that how I will survive after few days and who will support us

there is a recession out there. Canadians who have lived here for 30 years are also looking for work. Did you check the employment situation before you got on the plane?

Did you do any job research while you were waiting for your PR?

Students in Canada cannot collect welfare. They are eligible for student loans but these are only meant to cover part of the cost of tuition and living expenses, not the full amount. The way student loan plans are structured makes it difficult for born Canadians from lower middle class or low working class backgrounds to complete post-secondary studies.

Those from middle class or upper class backgrounds complete university, along with international students and first generation Canadian´s whose families very often prioritize education and save every way possible to finance their education.

People from all different backgrounds in Canada can feel the system is working against them. Immigrants with good English that is accented and slightly grammatically incorrect often find it impossible to believe their language skills are hindering their success in obtaining a professional position. Many people who enter the country under the skilled worker category believe their success in fitting this category means they will have success obtaining a job. That category is created based on whom the government wishes our country were populated by, well educated people. It is not created with any consideration to the jobs available. The private sector didn´t create that category or give you citizenship, the government did.

I would suggest trying for relevant Canadian experience by any means necessary. It is amazing how much relevant Canadian experience and Canadian references will help your job search. The Career Bridge program offered by Career Edge is one option.

All types of Canadians are suffering. While some posters believe brown immigrants are barred entry into professions, other people believe they have worked hard their whole lives while immigrants qualify for more benefits than they do. Most people agree that Aboriginals living on reserves have it worst off, they are physically and socio-economically segregated from society. You are not, you can integrate but it requires a change in your perspective.
