Hi, I´m getting divorced here in Japan, and I am a Canadian citizen. My wife is Japanese. The divorce process is easy here, but I was reading that to get divorced in Canada, one must be a resident of Canada for at least one year before a divorce is permitted. Is there a way to get divorced in Canada as well without one of us being a resident of Canada for one year? We were married in Canada, and later registered the marriage in Japan. Does that mean as I read on Google answers (now doesn´t accept questions) that the divorce must be done again in Canada after the divorce in Japan? Thanks.

(in reply to: Divorce in Japan) Get a consultation from a lawyer in this regard. You can google search lawyers in Canada and get a consultation over the phone. They might charge some fee for the consultation. Or look for free initial consulations, there are many lawyers offering the services.

(in reply to: Divorce in Japan) You can register your divorce at the Canadian embassy in Japan and formalize it in Canadian terms that way.
