our subject line is so mis-leading.

I would like to think any potential changes might be a step in the right direction but until we see the rules that accompany the proposed legislative changes it is really hard to say.

All I hope is that we don´t trade one set of complaints for another.

I have been stuck to CNN all evening. I wish they would all stop acting so shocked. Good grief... have none of those folks ever attended church before?

I wish Obama had given his speech in a different context - only because they are insisting on measuring every word instead of simply listening. He said things nobody else could say in a way nobody else could say it. Rumour has it that he wrote his own speech. Extremely profound - and true... if you really listened and were willing to set aside one´s propencity to be offended.

(while Roy might disagree) I think he showed today why he deserves a chance to lead the country.

Come on Sharon Roy for Prime Minister!!! LOL

Look a man´s word is his word. We are all glorified and tainted by whom we hang out with. Senator Obama knows that!

I think that the media has an obligation to pick apart his comments he is running for President. He was married in this Church and Baptized his children in this Church. Obama has listened to hundreds of sermons in this Church and the issue is----DID SOME OF THESE SERMONS CREATE A LITTLE OF WHO HE IS?

Politicians need not to be too controversial. Obama knew long ago that this Pastor was a problem waiting to happen. He should of distanced himself and he didn´t---THAT SPEAKS TO HIS DECISION PROCESS BEING SEVERELY FLAWED.

Now the issue of race would not be as near important if he was running for Prime Minister in Canada. But he is running in the USA where it makes a huge difference.

WHY????? THAT DOES NOT MAKE LOGICAL SENSE TO ME BUT THAT IS THE WAY IT IS.

I think Obama showed class in what he did yesterday. Look, there is no debating whether the pastor was or for that matter will be a part of his life, but rather than throw him under the bus, he explained how he cannot disown him. That was a class act.
Look at what the other candidates do.... in the blink of an eye they just pretend as if they don´t have anything to do with the controversy and disown the relationship.
Note: I am not a staunch supporter of Obama, but just my thoughts !

I don´t really care who win or loses. But it was the best speech I have ever listen from Presidential Candidates in my life . It was really touching.

People are saying it was fact but he didn´t go far to distance himself with his pastor.

Why all the heat on Obama? What about Clinton? She´s hardly the model of sparkling associations. Has everyone forgotten her own husband was impeached? Has everyone forgotten their many, many indiscretions and scandals?

As usual, the person who is trying to be open and honest and REAL, gets the most flack. So he knows someone who is a bigot; big deal. Who doesn´t? Can anyone honestly say the Clintons don´t (or aren´t themselves?)?

It was an eloquent, from the heart speech, dealing openly with something completely unspeakable in this country. It´s time to give credit where it is due, and not beat down the person who is playing the game fairly.

from my personal perspective I think it took guts not to throw his pastor under the bus. Context has a terrible way of inflaming things that dont´need any assistance.

I am hopeful that whoever wins, the speech proves to be a focus for people moving forwards and there might be positive results.

Last night watching Fox News (we report you decide) commentary by former Bill Clinton adviser, now pundit, Dick Morris. He arrogantly stated that Obama´s speech failed because he didn´t
"cut the pastor off at the knees. In this business you have to dump people no longer useful". The right wing in this country never ceases to amaze me.

Anti-war congressman Jack Murtha endorses Hillary. Baffles many Democrats (me included) in supporting someone who voted for Bush´s Iraq war powers resolution.

I am sure Barak´s pastor is horrified that he is being used to discredit Obama. It seems like politics has gone mad.

Do white folks not realize what goes on in black churches? I have heard a few things in white churches that make my hair stand up on end too. I am sure for every sermon that raises your eyebrows there were 20 that were great but we will never see them. The CNN commentator had me really annoyed when she acted so shocked - as if there was not an element of truth in what the man was saying. How many white ostriches are there out there?

The whole scrutiny thing is enough to make the smart and the capable candidates avoid politics all together. who needs it.

Exactly, Sharon. Why do you think so few Americans vote, or care about politics in general? Who needs more of the bickering, the stabbing in the back, the slander? What we need in this country (and in all countries; I do recognize that many are worse off) is to talk about what really MATTERS, about the real issues and not just the politico-speak. Don´t think for a moment that the Clinton camp doesn´t know exactly what they are doing, distracting the country from the issues that obviously resonate with Americans. Easier to keep them bickering about petty stuff than have them feel empowered to make real change.

Sure white America knows enough about what goes on in black churches to know that it seems foreign and scary, and therefore needs to be kept down or at least ignored. Did Huckabee´s sermons ever make the nightly news? Who scrutinized them? Do we really think they were all glowing and loving, or do you suppose there was plenty of intolerance in his words as well (thankfully we many never have to know). What about the Clinton´s preacher/pastor/ sermon maker (sorry, don´t know the proper term!)? Anything not so kind in his words in his entire lifetime? Seriously, who cares. It´s beyond my comprehension that people give this so much of their energy, and that so many people are unable (unwilling) to look at the big picture.

it´s not just US politics or presidential elections. I am living and breathing it at a civic level hear in Vancouver. The issues almost become irrelevant. What is more important is scoring points against the opposition and using sound bites to twist public opinion. They take positions that use fear instead of logic as their basis and worry about power rather than outcomes. It makes me insane. And civic politics does not even pay well! The mayor makes $100K and councillors make around $60K. insane.

You could pay me a million dollars and I would never run for political office.
