Hello, I was wondering if someone could help with the mammoth task of immigrating to Canada. At present, I have a year long working visa until January 2009 to work in Canada. I am from the UK, but my girlfriend is Canadian. I wish to extend my visa for as long as possible, and carry on living in the country that I have fallen in love with.
I did not attend University but I obtained 2 A-Levels from College, I also have 4 years experience as a climbing instructor and outdoor education instructor, including two years at managerial level. I currently work at a climbing gym in Canada.
Having looked through all the different ways, Im a little intimidated to be honest and need a push in the right direction. Can anyone be honest with my chances or assist me at all? It would be much appreciated.
Ian

(in reply to: Please Help: Im Stuck!) Hi Ian,
From your post, I am not clear if you are looking to apply for Permanent Residency (PR) or simply continue to extend our Canadian visa as long as possible.
If its extending the visa, I am not sure how to do that, as I haven’t looked into it.
If you are looking to apply for PR, you possibly have 3 routes:
1: If you have lived with your girlfriend as a common-law partner, she maybe able to sponsor you. Again, I am not very familiar with that area as I haven’t looked into that. Others would be able to offer better advice in this area, and the following link would get you started there (http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigrate/sponsor/index.asp)
2: You maybe able to apply under skilled worker program. You need 67 points to be able to file an application. From your brief post, I think you may have that (possibly more). You may want to take the self-assessment test (http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigrate/skilled/assess/index.asp) to see how may points you qualify for. Based on your post, I assumed the following and came up with 72 points:
Completed Secondary school: 5
High proficiency in English (none in French): 16
4 Years of work experience: 21
Age (if you are between 21 and 49 years): 10
Arranged employment (could you get an HRSDC approved job in Canada?): 10
Adaptability: (extra 5 points for arranged employment, possible family in Canada [spouse/common-law partner], possible 1 year work experience in Canada) 10
Possible 72 points. Of course, you know your circumstances better and figure out how many of the above points you are likely to get.
3: Lastly, you may also be able to apply under self-employed category. As a climbing instructor, you most probably fall in the NOC code 525 (Athletes, Coaches, Referees and Related Occupations). Take a look at the various subcategories at http://www23.hrdc-drhc.gc.ca/2001/e/groups/5.shtml (you have to scroll all the way down to the last category). If that is a correct NOC code, you could apply under self-employed category, but you would need relevant experience of either being self-employed or having participated at world-class level (not sure what that means). For that you only need 35 points. For more information take a look at http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigrate/business/self-employed/definitions.asp.
Hope this helps.
Ray
