Subject: TEF
Hello, they asked me the Ielts, and I got an overall of 6, it gives me a total of 10 points in language, and a final score of 63 points. In the forms I claimed points for French, I am a teacher of French and I put it as my first language, but they ask for English since (I suppose) I am applying for an English province. They don´t ask me the TEF. According to the circumstances, should I take the TEF for gaining some points? or are they going give me "some" points for my knoledge of French? And should I change my first language in the up date forms? I have to give them all the supporting documents by april 31st. Urtgent your advice, PLEASE. THANKS VERY MUCH

which ever is your stronger language - you should put it first. preferably your mother tongue. First languages gets more points.

Thanks, Sharon, you have always answered the few questions I have posted here, I really appreciate your help, thanks. In the forms only English or French are written, (Spanish is my mother tongue) My question is if I have to take the TEF considering the Ielts results although they did not ask for it, and if it is preferable wait for the Tef results to choose my first language, French is stronger for me, but they don`t ask TEF, how many points are they going to give me? thanks in advance

I have no idea how many points and what the process might be. I would actually attempt to ask them. Tell them you are fluent in french. I would attempt to get tested in both langages to validate your points. Otherwise they may turn you down.

HOWEVER, look if you can´t get yourself a work permit as a french teacher!

hello.
it is a bit more complicated than that and you should have actually known this before applying or putting in the application, to avoid this kind of situation..
basically, you have to chose one language, that is your ´first´ official language. all your communicaton with cic will be in that language (eg. potential interviews etc. ). you can also get additional points for claiming knowledge of the second offical language in canada. in both cases, you need significant proof for your language ability.. unless, one of them is your first language. from your message above I get, that you chose french as your first official language in the documents, probably stated that you are teaching it and how long and where you´ve acquired your skills? If they don´t ask for the tef, that got accepted.. (that would be my assumption). I was told myself, since I have studied, written my thesis, lived and worked here for as many years as I have, I will not have to submit proof for english.. but could for french, if I have some knowledge of it. Basically, it should be the same in your case.. you are trying to get more points, since you have knowledge of english, too, but it is to be expected, that you need to submit proof for it.

the other thing is, that you might be right with them expecting a certain level of profiency in english, if you are intending to live in an english speaking province.. but I haven´t heard of it..
I think, they are just following normal procedure. since your mother tongue is either english or french, I´d say it´s natural..

oh, and I forgot. the points you are refering to (you said, you got 10 points for language).. you have to check in what category.. there are two - for your first offical language (french, I assume) and your second.. you should have more for french, and the ielts test basically proves, what level you are at with your language skills in english, for additional! points.. that´s seperate, though.. you should definitely be higher than 10 with your french level, since you are teaching it .. if you weren´t given the amount of points for it, that you think represent your level, simply do the TEF to give proof..
