Subject: Police verification for Canada immigration
  Hi,

I am thinking about applying for Canada permanent residence under skilled worker program. The process oulined on the Canadian Immigration website says that I need to get police clearance from every country where I have stayed for more than six months. I was in US for some time and now in India. In India I can get a clearance from the Regional Passport Office. For US, the website says that I need to get a fingerptint card checked by the FBI. I have not found any place here in Hyderabad where I can get fingerprinting done. Moreover if I send the application to FBI from here, will they send back the results to Hyderebad?

Any help will be appreciated.

Regards

Try to get your local police to take your fingerprints for the FBI... that´s what we did here in the UAE... or contact your local USA embassy and ask them what to do...

After you get your fingerprints done you send the card back to teh FBI and they will send the police report to you... you will then send the police report to CIC with whatever other documents you need to send...

Good Luck!

Yup...you can get your finger prints at any local police station, howver i am not sure if what kind of card they are going to use. So you may contact US Consulate and ask them that you need FBI clearance and they will tell you the whole process. Usually, people from FBI are also assigned at US consulates abroad and they deal with these kind of queries besides other business. Or You may go to FBI website and send them an e-mail.

The fingerprint form is available on FBI website. The directions are there as well. I think that the form needs to be attested at the police station.

I got mine done at the fingerprinting bureau in Chennai.

I too was in the same situation, and could not find a solution to this problem through any of the Forums. Finally, this is what I did.

The FBI Fingerprinting Card can be downloaded from the internet, and I did that. With this, I approached the local Police Station (of course, it helps if you have some ´connections´ with the police - I did), and the fingerprinting technician there did a nice job of taking the fingerprints the way FBI has specified. And to my surprise, I found out that our Police Stations also have Fingerprint Cards similar to the one FBI uses! I had my fingerprints on one of them too, and had around five sets of the downloaded card prepared. Of these, I sent the Indian Police Fingerprint Card and three sets of the downloaded ones to FBI, along with the authorization to debit the fees to my credit card, and sent another two sets to Illinois state police for their clearance, along with a demand draft for $ 20. All this was done two weeks ago.

On 28 March 2008, I received an envelope from Illinois Police, along with their own fingerprinting card, and directions for using it. I had my fingerprints taken on this card, again by the local police, and couriered the same back to Illinois on 29th March. However, in the mean time, on 31st March, a I received the clearance from Illinois State Police Department!

I am still waiting for clearance certificate, which may take a few weeks more. In the mean time, I find that the fees for the same has already been debited to my Credit Card, which I take as a positive sign.

If you need any further information on this, please feel free to ask.

Illinois state clearance (in reply to: Police verification for Canada immigration)
Raj_T,

Thanks for a great update, you sure made my day.. I have a question..

In what name did you send the DD for $20 to Illinois.
I am going to do the same download the FBI card and also send a local card to Illinois. Have already done the FBI card 2 years ago.

Thanks

Anand

Are police and FBI clearance the same? (in reply to: Police verification for Canada immigration)
Im applying for Canadian Immigration. I lived in California for six yrs 1982-1988. I sent my fingerprints, using an FBI fingerprint card to the State of California, Dept. of Justice, Bureau of Criminal Identification and Information and they responded by stating that I have "no record" or my "fingerprints did not identify with any criminal history record maintained by this Bueau." The Canadian Embassy, Manila requires me to submit a California and FBI police certificates. Im presuming this is a California certificate but im not sure.

Shall I submit this document to the Canadian Embassy, Manila, or shall i submit it to the FBI office in US to ge the FBI certificate? Beth SV
