Subject: Which city is best in BC
I´m planning to go back to Canada soon (yes I´m not immigrating, I´m a citizen), and I need to find a city where it´s not too dodgy and where the secondary schools are good for my daughter. Any reccommendations?

Schools and weather, I personally like Kelowna but it all depends what type of job are you looking for.

Cheers

Hey Bill

I got my very first client from Kelowna today and had to ask where it was. I knew the basic area but he made it sound real nice.

I´ve done a bit of research on Kelowna and it looks a lot like where I grew up in Northern California (though more remote): wine country, hilly, smallish urban center in an otherwise rural area.

What I haven´t been able to find yet are jobs: does anyone know what the major employers are in the area, or the major types of employment? (Yep, Sharon--we´ve decided to include BC to our list!)

I am also wondering how remote it really is; from what I can tell, it´s about half way between Vancouver and Calgary? Does it FEEL as remote as it sounds?

there is nothing small or hickish about it. Beautiful setting, slower pace than Vancouver. Has big city issues like panhandling and property crime... it is about 4 hours by car. Good skiing in the area.

It is not the cheapest place to buy a home but much less than Vancouver. They always say, location, location, location.

Kelowna has the reputation of being a town people retired to. Not any more. It is full of young families.

One of the things I love about Canadian small towns and cities is how urban and self contained they are, much more like European villages than American burgs. No matter where I am in Canada, I am always amazed how educated and interesting (and interested) small town Canadians are, and how lively and vibrant the towns are, regardless of proximity to larger urban centers. The majority of small towns in the US I find to be very hickish and uneducated (for the most part; of course there are exceptions and I´ve lived in a couple); the same simply seems not to be true up north. I´m sure there are exceptions there too, but in general I think I´d find small town Canada to be quite appealing and livable.

I´d love to hear any more suggestions on vibrant towns and small cities as we continue our search. :)
