Subject: Salary Comparison
hello, I am considering moving to Canada in the near future, any ideas what the salary comparison is between the US and Canada? I know taxes are higher, but salaries could be higher at the same time...

I currently hold a BS in Economics and work as an Analyst making $49k a year would Canada be the same?

major city? rural? what is your health insurance costing you? do you have dependents - all these things play into the number you wish to compare and what your Canadian take home pay might be.

you could very well earn less in Canada but have more in your household budget to spend every month.

That depends on many things.

I general I don´t think that there is any great difference in the salary level PROVIDED that you get the same job.

Though you shouldn´t compare CA salary with Ontario; or Alberta with Wyoming.

This tool is an estimator.... remember it may be a very rough estimate, it will depend on your situation.

Raj,

Very good link ; though I don´t think that Brad originally asked about the take home comparison bet´n US/Canada.
I also got another table for tax deductions in Canada (2006)

His question was different; salary comparison for the same position. At least that what I understood.

Most of the people have an idea that salary in the USA is dramatically higher than Canada (question of take home amount is different).

Go to this site Brad and look for a detailed explanation of your work and see for yourself. You can see a difference for cost of living based on the cities and province you pick http://www.jobbank.gc.ca/Intro_en.aspx

Not knowing the type of analyst you are exactly I am unwilling to hazard a guess.

If I say deduct your health insurance costs in the states to get a better comparison DC & Raj may object.

You can also check out housing costs by going to www.mls.ca

This is a federal government site and another site would be Monster.ca or workoplois.ca but your position may not actually list income due to the high qualifications the employer is looking for and salary is normally negotiable at your level.

Good hunting

Roy,

I never objected in health insurrance cost, whenever it comes I fully agree and always admit that I feel disgusted with this burden as well.

Here also I wrote before that given the same position; salary difference is not that much in US/Canada agianst the popular belief.

I guess i should have added that i live in Seattle and I am moving to Vancouver, which i belive are extremely similar in terms of cost of living,

DC is right, same job position/different country, He also mention that the idea is that a US salary is Dramatically higher, my Health insurance costs me about $100 a month and its above average in terms of service... Since i live in WA we dont have State income tax but i still pay Federal and FICA

When people criticize high Canadian tax they forget about the FICA and medicare we use to pay in the US. That balance high Canadian tax in some extent, add the health insurance....

As an Economist i have strong knowledge in Labor, (though im still a rookie) DC is right that in order to compare taxes in Canada againts the US i would have to also ad Medicare and health insurace... if that comparison is done, then what?

My guess is, if you are older you are better of in Canada since costs of health care will be lower,
If you are young with no kids, then you may be better of in the US since you can always op out of healthcare, independently is thats a good choice or not you still can, where in Canada is not optional...

My biggest concern is that ill be worse of in Canada than the US.. i know 42k Us is not the same kas 42k in canada but how different is it really?

Just keep in mind that even if you are young you may need to go for extensive health care..hospital..operattion. Even with insurance you have to pay lot out of your pocket.

About 42 K in US/Canada: That depends on the living cost mainly, partcularly on real estate in that area. High sales tax in Canada is also another factor. I don´t have idea about living cost comparion bet´n Seatle/Vancouver.

In general US is cheaper than Canada. Unless start comparing like CA bay area with Timmins, ON.

With my current income in FL I can comfortably maintain 2 cars+ home, with the same income in Toronto I wouldn´t be able to maintain home and more than 1 car. Even Apt. rents are cheaper in the US.
