Subject: UK TV Compatibility
I have a newish Samsung LCD tv with Freeview integral. I asked Samsung if it would work in Canada and they said all I´d need was a new digibox. But isn´t there more to it? Apart from the power differential, isn´t the colour system different (NTSC there and Pal here)? Or doesn´t that matter with digital?

Well, CIC has not yet issued a memo on Samsung LCD compatibility in Canada but parliament is working hard on this issue and i hope they will include this in new legislation.

Anyways, let me give you a brief idea about that legislation, which is expected. And that says that USA and Canada use 110 power and as long as your TV is 110 it will work in USA and Canada but if it is 220 then it wont unless you get something called power regulator. Since it is a TV not a Cell phone so defintely you will have to get a digital box from local service provider because so far cable TV or satellite do not offer roaming services.

I hope this satisfy your query, if not, please do not hesitate to contact CIC call centre or write to your nearby consulate. Or may be Gordon Brown can help you with this issue as well because they can ask CIC to include this in their laws about immigartion. What do you say about new legislation by the way.

Good luck with your TV application ( a new category introduced by CIC)
Hail CIC......:)

The analog broadcast standard is NTSC in North America and PAL/SECAM in Europe, and they´re being phased out. The new digital standard in North America is ATSC, and DVB in Europe. None are compatible. However, there are multisystem TVs on the market mostly for analog compatibility (check if yours is).

As far as power, you also need to down convert from 220v/50hz to North American 110v/60hz. Your LCD TV likely supports both 50hz and 60hz already, and may also support 110 volts. Separate converters are readily available.

Digibox is known as set top box in North America. I think Samsung is correct. If you´re going to subscribe to cable or satellite service in Canada, your European HDTV will likely work with a Canadian digital set top box. However, you would not be able to receive off-the-air or direct-connect cable QAM broadcasts, since your TV has the European DVB/PAL tuner rather than the necessary ATSC/NTSC/QAM tuner for North America standards.

Aside from the tuner and power differences issues, I believe your LCD HDTV would work purely as a monitor with the right set top box for the digital service you´d be subscribing to in Canada.

Other techies may want to correct me if I´m wrong.

Orchid, now a days technology is so developed that new TV maintain both European and American standard.Ask Samsung..they can provide you whether you have a Pal/NTSC..it should also be written on your TV guide. I got a plasma Panasonic from Finland and it will work in Canada..only I have buy an adaptor and of course digi box..

Sorry but I don´t think your TV is going to work here. Main reasons are what Richard just said regarding to the PAL and ATSC protocol and we use 120V / 60Hz in this neck of the woods.

One thing that you have to consider is that your TV won´t be CSA approved.

Hope it helps.

Cheers

also consider what it is going to cost you to ship it. I just bought the 2008 Panasonic 50" plasma. $3,000 tax in. It´s rated in the top 3 for plasma TVs and I know the Samsung prices are slightly less. Have a look at Bestbuy.ca or Futureshop.ca to get an idea of what a new one would cost you.

I would be inclined to sell your TV, the money together with what you save on shipping and buy a new one here that will have a warranty and will arrive at your home safe and sound with no hassles.

High definition and digital signals require a cable box. the type that does not record is about $400. The recording model is about $650.

I bought a Sony PS3(110V) in US and it worked in Turkey(220V) without a converter. I wonder if Tv will work the same way PS3 did.
