Subject: Off Topic question....
  Hi guys,
Myself and wife are landed immigrants of Canada. I fear that my wife has type 2 diabetes, I mean we just found out after the physicals... are not sure but the doc is saying its probably on the onset. Now, when we did the medicals for immigration (about 3 yrs back) there was no such indication. So my question is that is it going to be an issue at all as far as the treatment is concerned in Canada ? I know one cannot predict when will you get sick in life, but the timing of this is really bad, so I am just concerned.

On a separate note.... in your opinion... is warm weather more beneficial for diabetics or cold weather ?

I don´t think it will affect treatment whatsoever.

Weather has no impact on diabetes - it is all about diet and exercise. I know of people that control their diabetes without medication simply by managing their choice of food and activity.

Yeah, our doc was explaining to us on the same lines, not that much diet related yet as she is keeping a healthy body weight, but light exercise is absolutely essential. I was thinking of the weather because I guess it may be easier in the warmer weather to get some outdoor exercise, and I guess in the winter weather you will need more motivation to watch the diet and exercise indoors.

EXERCISE when there is a will there is a way.

DIET when there is a will there is a way.

Raj like Canada in general has no community centers or fitness clubs with indoor facilities! Come on Raj what are you thinking?

One can go to any mall early and walk around inside and since fast walking has been reported as a better exercise then most other exercises being free as well I do not see she has a problem.

Stop giving your partner stress which is one of the strongest factors that cause diabetes. Now is the time for calm, cool, logical, thinking.

We also follow such things and I concur completely with Sharon and Roy. Exercise, weight control, and what you eat. Must stay away from processed foods as much as possible, such as sweets, sugar, white flour, white rice, orange juice, which spike the glucose level. More raw vegetables, fruit, and whole grain bread and cereal.

By the way, a half hour walk every day can go along way with this. I agree in winter it can be tough, but throw on a parka, hat, gloves, and that half hour gets easier every day.

you know that community centre I told you about last week (?) it has a full fitness room for use. You can get an annual membership for $256.

If you move to the wetcoast, people walk or jog here from March to November. and during those months if the sun is shining - all bets are off.

I know the first time the doctor says the word diabetes it is a shock and can cause a lot of fear. Get on google and educate yourselves. The world has not ended. You just need to make some lifestyle adjustments and be responsible to your body. If she is in onset stage she have a great opportunity to manage her risks.

not wanting to open a can of worms here but I am curious what might happen to your medical insurance rates if the diabetes is confirmed.

Thanks for your help guys. Yes its been kinda shocking so far for both of us. Thanks for giving us some good suggestions. Roy, I agree, "where there is ..... way".

Sharon, I´m a little confused about your comment on the insurance thing. I´m in a group plan and so ....
Our group insurance rates may go up for the next year, but I doubt by a significant amount as its a group plan, and we already have a lot of guys in the 50s and 60s and needing more intensive care than my wife may need (Hint: I´m already paying for others medicare, LOL !!). What will affect me directly is the out of pocket expenses that I may have to spend every month, like pills and all other monitoring devices, strips, accessories etc.

At this moment its all crazy and we are thinking of getting a second opinion. Thanks for your help guys, I appreciate it.

Question about the medical insurance aspect. Why would there be any concern about medical rates going up? Doesn´t everyone pay the same provincial health insurance rates, based only on income level, and regardless of existing or preexisting conditions?

No Raj, i belive it is not going be an issue at all. To deal with Diabetes she must regulraly exercise and no sweet stuff at all. Please go to local herbal medicine store and ask for BITTER GOURD TEA and it is really going to help. She should drink this tea regularly. She must focus on reducing the weight as well. Or i should say she should maintain a healthy weight.

Weather has nothing to do with diabetes. I know someone and his wife had heart murmur (hole in the heart in common language) and they immigrated without any problem. Probably doctors could not find any of such thing that time. After a year they found this out and then she went through a surgery and stuff. And it did not become an issue. So i am providing their example just to let you know that there isn´t going to be any issue.

I pray for your wife´s health and she takes above mentioned measure, i hope she will be able to manage this. Good Luck!

I asked about health insurance because Raj is not currently in Canada. In Canada nothing changes in terms of medical premiums.

Get the second opinion, but take this as a huge wake up call. Diabetes is genetic - any family members with diabetes? If so, live under the assumption that it could visit your household sooner or later. This is different than yes cancer or no cancer. If the pancreas is acting up up, it is time to take serious consideration of the signals. Before running off to the health food store, get some well proven info about lifestyle management. There are several diabetes websites out there.

the myth that sweet is the only issue is not accurate. My very good friend has diabetes. Carbs must be rationed and spaced, fruit must be rationed and spaced, fibre becomes critical, frequency of meals and size of meals becomes critical.

once you get past the early education stuff, ask, your doctor if he would approve using Salba. It is a natural grain that is a little like sesame seeds but with a flavour closer to grass. It has properties that are extremely helpful in the regulation of blood sugar - but again... make sure everything you do is in consultation with your doctor.

I was confused. When Raj said they were landed immigrants, I assumed living there as well. Whew, glad no rate changes in Canada for any medical reason. That´s the whole point of Canada for many people.

Just to add to above dietary recommendations, been reading in the news about research showing 2 cups or more of coffee per day can prevent diabetes. Also, type-2 is reversible with lifestyle change.

We´re believers in Dr. Weil´s natural approach to health living. This may be of interest:
