sorry for the confusion regarding landed immigrants, we went back to New york. Also we do not anticipate any increase in the insurance premium per se, but my out of pocket expenses will rise for medicines and stuff.

I appreciate the suggestions and very specific information regarding diet choices and alternatives to normal food, my wife is already at ease now. Her Dad is diabetic, so we think genes have played an important part.... Once again, thanks everyone, didn´t mean to bore you guys too much, but I think I have enough leads now to gather all the info I need to start the adjustment phase in our lives.

forget the second opinion. If Daddy is diabetic, and the doctor is even just raising the red flag... time to live a diabetic lifestyle. It is actually not as difficult as you think and quite honestly, we would all be better off if we adopted the strategy.

it is not boring. A diagnosis of diabetes can be scary. we always see the consequences on TV but nobody ever tells you if the people in the story even attempted to manage their condition- the answer is usually not!

from google

Bitter melon has been observed to have blood sugar-lowering effects, but there is only limited research specifically using bitter melon in humans. Bitter melon juice, fruit and dried powder have been used to moderate hypoglycemic effects in small, poorly designed studies. It is not clear what dose may be safe and effective. Bitter melon should not be use by patients with diabetes unless they are closely supervised by a qualified health care provider.

Raj, you are going to find that everyone (including myself - and for that I apologize) will have the latest suplement or remedy for your wife to try. Get a handle on the situation first. Get to understand how the condition impacts your life, understand how the meds work, understand the risks etc. Once you are there, it will be much easier to make intelligent decisions about alternative treatments. Over-treatment is as dangerous as no treatment at all. Most herbs are drugs too... just unregulated, without standards of potency annd a huge price tag. Your wife may find she does not need any sort of medication at all if she can control it with lifestyle.

Raj, if you are originally from Soth Asia then i do not think you need more information about bitter melon. Because this is one of the vegtables consumed at very large scale in South Asia. And i belive i should not even discuss the importance of Ayurvedic treatment which is one of the specialities of India. India is the birth place of ayurvedic treatment and roots of naturopathic medicines are some how connected to India to large extent as well. RIGHT? So behaving with bitter melon wont be very challenging for you.....:)

However, do not take my words for it. As advised by other members do your research and do whatever is beneficial for you and your wife. I pray for her good health.

wow, at 21 Mike is an ex-policeman, doctor, immigration expert and moralist. you are a busy boy.

nothing wrong with naturpathic medicine - I am a firm believer and user. BUT, when you are dealing with a new condition you must make a choice - do it yourself or trust an expert to assist you at least for a little while. Just because it is natural does not make it any less a drug. The combining of any sort of drug must be done cautiously and with full supervision. Over medicating diabetes can kill you! Ever heard of a diabetic coma?

that is all I am saying

Metforman, Diabeta, Gliberide etc (sp) including Insulin is by far cheaper in Canada then the US.

Not only that, the meds are all deductible on her Income Taxes. COSCO has the cheapest costs but of course it requires a membership.

Exercise and Diet. All you need to focus on are the portions. Portion size is the problem. Remember humans used to be hunters and gatherers when we were created/evolved.

A deck of cards (size) for protein. A tennis ball(size) for starch. Lots of veggies. PLUS EXERCISE!

This subject I know a lot about being a diabetic for years.

Get her a Canadian Diabetic specialist and she gets free meters etc.

Common Sense.
