Subject: Medical degree- how many points do I get
  Hi,

I´ll be graduating from a UK university with a degree in medicine this year. Additionally, I´ve got a bachelors degree as well. The thing is, in the UK the medicine course is considered an undergrad degree, but in Canada and the USA, its a postgrad degree. Also, Canada has its own medical licensing exam....which I have not taken (and would rather not have to take it, as I do not intend to work as a doctor in the long term).....would that mean that I would get no extra points at all for my medical degree?

How many points would I get for my qualifications alone under the Skilled worker program?

I´m looking to immigrate to either Canada or the US. I´ve been looking through this message board, and have found it extremely informative. Could anyone recommend a similar message board (if it exists) for immigration to the USA?

Thanks everyone.

British medical degree emigration (in reply to: Medical degree- how many points do I get)
Hi justme, when you say emigrate to Canada, do you mean under the professional worker program? If you do, then you do realise that you must have at least 12 months of experience with a job on the NOC list? (Having a degree in and of itself will not suffice.) Regarding medical degrees, I believe Canada is strict regarding foreign Doctors. Take a look at these:

and

Anyway, my point is that you need experience to get into Canada, not just a degree. Look at the NOC list and see if there is a job there that you would like to train in. Alternatively, I would recommend that you apply to study for a Masters in Canada in some form of science and then apply to get in that way. Best of luck! Anton

Well, I realized around my 4th year that I probably do not, after all, wish to spend my life practicing medicine. By then, after investing 4 years in the course, I thought I might as well finish it. But I´m going to work as a doctor for a year first at least before applying. I´m 100% sure I want to emigrate to north america, but only about 80% sure that I want to give up a career in medicine for good...so the year of working will hopefully help me decide.

So, at this point, I have no plans to actually work as a doctor in Canada (future career will require some soul-searching). But I need all the points I can get under the Skilled worker program.....I do not know any French, have no partner, no relatives in Canada, and I´ve never studied there....so I´m not able to get points in the other categories.
