Subject: Adding Last Remaining Relative to file
I am sponsoring my parents to join us in Canada, the file is in processing. There is also my aunt who is still in Russia, she is single and has no children, we would like to sponsor her too. She will be the last remaining relative from my side. I thought that my parents would be able to sponsor her after they are here, but it will take long time, and she is not getting younger. My question is - is it possible to apply for sponsorship for her as the Last Remaining Relative now (probably not, because my parents haven´t gotten through yet)? Or is it feasible to try including her in my parent´s file?

from my understanding, there is no option for you to sponsor your aunt. for that matter, I do not believe your parents can either.

I do not believe there is any such thing as ´last remaining relative´.

hopefully, someone will tell me that I am incorrect.

Well, I have a feeling I misinterpreted "the last remaining relative" concept. It seems it´s the other way around - if I was alone here without any family and there was nobody else but my aunt for me to sponsor, then it would work. Is that right? As for my parents sponsoring my aunt after they become permanent residents - why not? She´s my mom´s sister, after all...

yes, you are correct.

these are the rules:

You can sponsor:

parents
grandparents
brothers or sisters, nephews or nieces, granddaughters or grandsons who are orphaned, under 18 years of age and not married or in a common-law relationship

another relative of any age or relationship if none of the above relatives could be sponsored, and you have no other relatives who are Canadian citizens

So, your parents can sponsor their parents, granparents and unmarried children under the age of 18.

If your aunt does not fit one of those scenarios, I am afraid she may not have options unless she is able to come on her own merits and claim adaptability points for having family already in Canada.

Hold on. If I can sponsor my sister, why can´t mo mom sponsor her sister after she becomes permanent resident? I realise there is another topic arises about finances, but I can sign as co-sponsor, can´t I?

omg, that´s right... It´s clearly stated on the government´s site in section "Who cannot be sponsored"... Well, it looks there is no options for my aunt in the family immigration. Thank you Sharon for your info.

I am very sorry there isn´t better news. I can appreciate your desire to make sure your family is cared for.

Something to consider - I am not sure how old your aunt might be. If she does not speak english, Canada can be a very lonely place. Customs are different, language is different, it´s sometimes hard to make good friends when you are older, work prospects may be difficult. I am not convinced that bringing older people to Canada is the best option. I see a lot of parents who have been turned into full time family slaves.

I would hope your aunt can visit often. If you are concerned about her welfare, a little bit of money every month can go a long way to making life a little easier.
