Subject: background check/security clearance
How would one go about attaining a police clearance in a country in which the person was living illegally? The person lived there for 2 time periods, each of which totaled 6 years. Thanks.

That´s a delicate situation. A lot depends on the country and how it may link residence status with criminal background checking. If you´re talking about the U.S. for example, I don´t think the FBI background check is dependent on previous or current legal status, and you should be able to get results. Other countries may vary.

As to how, go to the country´s embassy or consulate to request a police check for the time period of residence. But you´ll probably be required to show your passport and if required visa documentation in order for the authorities to initiate the check.
