Subject: Application Process
I am thinking about applying for PR from the UK, with the intention of moving there at the very least two years from now. If I apply for PR now and find a job in a couple of years, will this speed up my process and if so by how much? If you get offered a job in Canada does anyone know how long a wait there is from accepting the job to being granted access? Also, would having been in the process for a couple of years help this process or would I be better to not apply just now and wait until I find a job first?

Thanks!

Stuart

Hi Stuart,

As it stands now, it is taking between 31 and 38 months to process PR application in London (http://cic.gc.ca/english/information/times/international/02a-skilled-fed.asp). Of course, the timeline can go up or down, as what this shows is the past performance, and not an indication of future results. So, if you were to go purely from that, you are looking at a wait of 2.5 to 3 years.

Also keep in mind that there is currently a proposal that could alter how the applications are processed. Currently, according to the Canadian legislation all applications must be processed in the order they are received. However, if the proposal passes, CIC may process some application before others (even if received later), depending on applicant’s education and experience and if that skill set is in demand in Canada. So, if the proposal passes and your skill sets are in demand, your application will be processed much faster. Of course, if your skill sets are not in demand, it will take much longer to get the application processed.

In either case (with or without the proposal being passed), getting an HRDC confirmed job offer will get your application processed much quicker. From what I have seen on various forums, it seems that the application can be processed as quickly as 6 months (once the job officer is in hand).

So, yes getting an HRDC confirmed job would get you in front of the queue quite quickly.

Having said that, would you only move to Canada if you have a job? Or would you move if you get PR application approved (even without a job)? If the latter is true, I suggest you apply as quickly as possible. If the current proposal does not pass, you want to get in the queue, so that you will be in front of the line in about 3 years (assuming the above timeline holds true). If you wait, the queue may get longer and hence longer wait.

Thanks for the reply Ray,

I was thinking that might be the case. Not sure many employers would take someone one that would start in at least 6 months time anyway. I work in software development as a manager with over 10 years experience, and as far as I´m aware, this is a required skill. Fingers crossed at least!

I´ve been thinking about moving for a number of years and think it´s time we started doing something about it. We won´t be ready to move for another 1.5 - 2 years so now seems and ideal time to start the application process. The only thing stopping me was the prospect of being offered a job nearer the time and speeding the process up considerably. Thinking about it, finding a job will be a lot easier if we´re part of the way through applying as it´d show commitment on our part.

Thanks agains for the comments,

Stu

If your employer is not willing to wait 6 months, you can always go over on a work permit while the PR application is in process.
