Subject: Moving to Canada after 2 yrs - Need help
  Hello all,

I am currently living in USA and moving to canada on PR status after 2 yrs. I landed in july 2006. My questions are:

1) I am taking my car with me. When i landed in 2006 this car was not on the list to follow items. Also there are some other items such as camcorder, camera, ipod etc. Will there be any problem at the border? Do i have to pay any import duties on these items. I bought this car from my brother and aksed him to put $500 as a selling amount. If I have to pay import duties then will it be on $500 or actual market price.

2) I am planning to visit my original country within couple months after i move to canada. will there be any problem when i come back?

3) I am taking more money to canada about 20K which is more than what i declared during my landing procedure. Do i get taxed on that as well or i can just take that with me. it is not in the form of cash it will be a cheque.

Please if anyone know these answers then it wwould be a great help.

Thanks.

Rocky

1) try to find receipts for your goods in case the border staff assume they are new and want you to pay any duty. the car will depend how far out of line the selling price is from market value.
2) there should be no problems with you travelling
3) I am not 100% sure about the last question. I think the answer is no to the tax

Bringing money is not going to be an issue my friend. If you are coming from US and you have a cheque of 20,000 dollars, you do not even have to mention it to US authorities unless it is CASH. If its not CASH, no need of even mentioning it. MY PERSONAL EXPERIENCE. When i was coming from US, i had a certified Cheque of 25000 dollars and i went to report it to US Border Officials, they took me into a room and asked me to show them the money. I took the cheque out of my pocket and they laughed and said, if its not the CASH, you have no need to report. You have landed before so reporting money to Canadian Customs is not required because you are bringing in the money not takeing it out and it is cheque only not CASH.

Sharon is right, have the recipets ready IF items do not look old or one can not tell that these are old items.

NO WORRIES, ARRIVE SAFELY.

Thanks Mike and Sharon,

The thing about my electronic goods is that i bought them in last 2-3 months. So even if i show them the receipts then they will be from last month or so.

Also does anyone of you know how can I get a car insurance just to cross the border (temporary insurance for 10-15 days)

Thank again for all your help

Your US insurance would be valid in Canada. You are coming from USA and you must be driving an insured car. Right? If not go to local state farm dealer and get insurance (monthly payment option). Remember if you are transferring the car to Canada, you need to send the car title to canadaian border in advance, as the car is not the goods to follow item.
