Subject: want to stay in canada
I´m in canada on a tourist visa staying with friends. I came here as a student during two summers to study french, and then returned this year to practice french and see about trying to move here (Qu?bec City). I have done lots of research and even applied to the university here in my effort to stay (and was accepted). However, studies cost way more as a foreign student and I would like to avoid accumulating debt if possible.
According to the immigration website I have decent chances of getting residency if I apply for Perminant Residency but i understand that there is a wait and my tourist visa is only good for another month. Ideally I would like to extend my temporary visa and ask for perminant residency simaltaneously.
I also did some research regarding work permits but even after speaking with employers (esl companies who really need anglophone workers) few are willing to go through the trouble of applying for a work visa with me. However many of them said that if I become a permanent resident they would be more than happy to hire me.
Im young, healthy and have a bachelor´s degree and I just really want to stay and live in this francophone city.
Please help me take the right steps so that I don´t have to go back to the states while waiting for residency.

Thanks
jeanna

you best and quickest hope is your student visa. alternately, the work permit idea is another option. Permanent Residency applications are taking 2-3 years.

I have been out of the contry for over 5 years, what are the chances of re-establishing my PR. I moved to Canada in 1965 and left in the 90´s. Any suggestions. I am staying with family in Toronto

Hey your quick solution is to get married. If you are a decent looking girl and have sweet temper, you can find a canada man quite easily. Just marry and apply for sponsorship. you can stay.

my friend has offered to do that... but i looked into details and it seems fishy.
we havent been living together and i dont want to live with him either. when i came over the border my story was that i was living with my boyfriend (which was true)... that makes a year that i lived on a temporary resident visa with a canadian boyfriend (two times crossed the border and they asked me his name, info. etc). we broke up and i have been living with a friend (but did not officially change my address).
So the idea of marrying another canadian guy jsut so i can stay seems fishy.
but if it is really that simple let me know how to do so.

not only is it fishy, it is fraud and a great way to get bumped out of Canada for good. Don´t even consider it.

work permits are legal, so are student visas.

Well the fact that you were already with a guy for a year in Canada makes things complicated. But if you were totally unattached, I would have swept ya off your feet!! I wear shining armor and a napoleonic hat and I live 4 hours (driving) from Quebec city!!!!! I will be in Quebec city during the last week of June (vacation). I work at a University. Anyways, if the relationship is genuine there is nothing to worry... so I won´t pay attention to Sharon and her ilk.

i understand, that is why i do not want to do that. But it is frustrating to have lived here with a boyfriend who i had honestly wanted to marry... but the relationship did not work out... Having all your friends and connections here and having to leave is a pretty awful feeling. But I am willing to do what I have to in order to survive and live peacefully and happilly.

Student Visas: While here I checked out every possibility. I was accepted to the university but I can´t afford another $12000 year right now (foreign studant tuition is very expensive).
I have only been out of college for a little over a year and the kind of companies who want to hire me here are too small and too busy to hassle with work permits. Even schools who desperately need english teachers or anglophone workers say they have had terrible experiences with work permit applications, thus no one is willing to go through those steps with me (except maybe a giant video game company in Montreal, no thanks).
At this point I have resolved myself to going back to the states, working, and applying for residency from there. But I want to know from people who understand the immigration system if this is my best option considering my situation. And if they think I should wait another year to apply so that I have another solid year of work experience to put on my application.
You have no idea how much i want to stay here and how much I love speaking in french everyday which is not easy to find in the US !! I´m not interested in fraud but I am interested in helpful solutions for a hard working, bright young college graduate (bottom of the totem pole! - not as easy to get a work permit!)

she just finished saying that she is staying with a FRIEND. that is not common law nor spousal and to claim it as such is fraud - period.

what makes you think she is interested in a troll?

sharon do you work for immigration ? I actually need advice from someone who knows what they are talking about, and no im not interesting in fabricating another relationship because i´m still tired of thinking about how my last one didnt work out. haha.
considering the above information, if i should just head back to the states for a while... do you suggest applying right away for residency (from US).. or waiting until i have more work experience ? I took the online test and it says that I have good chances of being accepted... but other people say it is tough considering that Im a recent graduate without years and years of work experience (and tons of money in the bank).
