Subject: Renewing citizenship
I´m renewing my son´s citizenship (he was born in Japan to a Canadian --> me). His current citizenship card has a picture of him eight years ago. On the form, it asks if he´s claiming citizenship because one of his parents is Canadian. He´s not claiming it I would say, cause he´s already got it. I´m not sure whether I should check the ´yes´ or ´no´ box on that question.

I think you´re reading too much into this. I interpret "claim" as "by reason of". They´re just trying to determine the basis of your son´s citizenship, regardless of when he acquired it. Since you´re the Canadian citizen parent who enabled your son´s citizenship, the answer is accurately yes, and I would check "yes".

I´m not understanding why you need to renew citizenship for your son. Citizenship never expires and ceases only when renounced. If he already had it, you only need to renew his passport. You may want to clarify what you´re trying to do here.

I just realized you might be talking about applying to regain or retain lost citizenship due to quirks in the citizenship laws. Some minors abroad between 1947-1977 or under 28 failing to confirm citizenship, both of which have been fixed but require reapplication.
