Subject: INFORMATION ABOUT PREGNANCY- RELATED HEALTHCARE
Hi. My family and I shall land in Toronto when I am five and a half months pregnant. As my OHIP coverage wont commence for three months, can anyone please advise me if there is any private health insurance plan I can apply for that covers pregnancy related costs such as gynaec charges, various health checks etc? From what information I have, private insurers do not cover such costs. Also, does anyone know how much a gynaec charges for checkups, blood tests, etc and how much approximately Toronto hospitals charge for a delivery? Any information is much appreciated.
Thanks, Andrea

Your child´s health care is covered the second the first breath is taken.

Hospital 24 hr stay approx $1,000.00 and the doctor $2,000.00 when you have no coverage.

But 5 1/2 plus 3 is 8 1/2 so the actual hospital 24 hr should be covered.

Been there paid that!

Check with Ontario Health. I know in Quebec, the Regie covers pregnant women the moment they arrive, including all costs associated with checkups, hospital, delivery, exams, tests, delivery, medication, etc.,...

My wife landed when she was 7 months pregnant, so I know from experience.

Quebec may be a little more progressive than Ontario in that regard, but it is worth checking.

From what I heard from other people there is NO coverage for the first 3 months in Ontario that would cover pregnancy. I may be wrong. The "travel insurance" type of thing you can get don´t cover pregnancy.

In our case that is one of the reason why we did not go to Ontario first. Didn´t want to take any risk or just be READY TO PAY!

You can check with others.

if you have a low risk pregnancy, you can go under the care of a midwife, that will be fully covered, except blood tests and ultrasounds. blood tests can be around $80 and ultrasounds around $84. but the actual care you get under the midwife clinic is free. home birth is an option to you, which is obviously, free. you also can decide to give birth in a hospital, and in that case, it varies how much a hospital room will cost. contact the hospital to find out, your midwife will tell you which hospitals she has privileges to give birth in. sometimes you can ask your midwife to negotiate on your behalf to lower the cost, if she has a good relationship with that hospital.

my friends and i have had excellent experience with midwives, so i really recommend it. however, there´s a high demand and sometimes getting into their practice might be difficult. explain your situation over the phone, and hopefully the receptionist can get you in. good luck!
