Subject: Time taken to get PR Card after landing
  Hi All,

I am currently in US. I have got my immigrant Visa for entering Canada.

My work Visa in US expires only in November 2005 but my immigrant Visa expires in February 2005. So, I just want to enter Canada with my family before end of February, apply for my PR card and once I get the card return back to US and move to Canada permanently in October.

I will be landing in Toronto.

Any idea how long it will take to get the PR card from the day of landing and what else do i need to do while in Canada like apply for SIN, open a bank account, etc.

Also where can I stay in Toronto. If i stay in a Hotel can i give the hotel address while filling my PR Card Form. Will the card be sent to the Hotel Address or can i give my US address and will the card be sent there ?

Any help would be appretiated.

Regards,
Thanmayie

Hmm, it will take 2-3 weeks to get PR card, you can give you hotel address, don´t mention the name of Hotel, You cannot give the US address.
So basically you are looking about 3-4 weeks.
PR card, SIN (Social Insurance Number), Bank Account etc.

Make sur eyou won´t lose your Canadian PR while doing so... You need to obtain permission to work outside!

If he´s landing in February and staying until he recieves his PR card....and if he´s only staying out of the country until November...he doesn´t have to worry about losing his Canadian permanent residence. The requirements to maintain your PR status are that you must remain in Canada atleast 2 of every 5 year.

I guessing from his post that once his work visa expires in the U.S he´ll be moving up to Canada permanently...so there shouldn´t be a problem. I don´t believe a Canadian permanent resident doesn´t need permission to work outside Canada unless they are going to be remaining outside Canada for over 3 years.

First, it takes 4 to 6 weeks to get the PR card, but you do not have to wait over there for that purpose. You can give the office and the ladning port an address of a relative or friend in Toronto and they will send it to them. Then that contact is to send it to you in the US.

You also should apply for the SIN, open a bank account and register your kids, if any, at one of the libraries in Toronto.

If you can give your address in Canada to the immigration officer when you landing, and your photos are OK. Then you can get your PR card in 2 or 3 weeks. Mine only 2 weeks! Good Luck!
