Subject: Settling in Vancouver

What would be a good and inexpensive place to settle in Vancouver. We are a family of four from Africa and a looking for a safe place to live and raise our kids. Since we do not know how long it will take to find jobs, we want an affordable place for a start.

Thanks for any suggestions.
Ralph

would you like to be near other new african immigrants or does it matter to you?

Oh my.. Vancouver is one of the most expensive cities in Canada... It takes much money to live there.

If still going there, the further out from the city, the cheaper... still costs a lot, however.

Good luck/

yes, Vancouver is expensive, but so are many other places. If you stay away from the downtown or west side of Vancouver, costs are less expensive. Mount Pleasant area, or Commerical Drive areas have good transit but are a little less expensive. also consider Burnaby. Good transit, a little less money and there is a a small African community in that area.

Oh yes, it would be nice to live near other people of African descent. But the most important things for us right now are affordability and safety.

Thanks for all the replies.

there is an areain south east Burnaby called Edmonds. It is not fancy but it is safe and reasonably priced. There is a good sized group of African folks that have created themselves a bit of a neighbourhood. They even have a few african shops that specialize in food items not normally found in the regular grocery stores. The area is about 30 minutes to downtown by transit and the schools should be just fine. I hope this helps you.

Hi Sharon,

As usual, thanks for the nice and informative replies. Can you tell me what you think of New Westminster and Richmond?

We will move there in mid summer. Plan to rent furnished for 1 mnth, have realtor show us around, then purchase a condo or townhouse thereafter. We need to be near the skytrain cause I am giving up my car yeah!!!

thanks../

I live in Richmond and work downtown. It is a nice community with a very large Asian population. The best chinese restaurants in the country! Schools are good, transit is not bad to downtown. They have just approved a 3 billion dollar transit line that will go from the airport (also in Richmond) to downtown in about 30 minutes. They want it built in time for our 2010 winter olympics. I live here because I can have more house/apartment than in the city for the same money. (2 buy) Richmond is not just a bedroom community. Many people live and work here very nicely and take the big adventure across the bridge into Vancouver only when they want to go skiing.

New Westminster is more ethnically mixed. It does not have the same vibrancy as Richmond but many people like living there. Work opportunities might be less but access to downtown is a little easier. Rental costs would be similar to Richmond.

I would be pleased to help with anything else you might like to know.
